ProceedS for the meet will be golog to aid Jim Wllsoo. now campa1go1ng motocross 10 Europe. Youtbful WUsoo bas been the Number 1 rider for the past two years In the Southern Callforo1a Trials Assoctal1on. Last year Jim began to dabble 10 the motocross game and made a meteoric rise in the sports. Jack Ward headed a crew consisting of Bob Grove. Bob Lersch, Duane Stone and tb1s writer 10 laying out the secl1ons. Much care was taken 10 the design of tbe secl10ns so tbat each would have Its own parl1cular cballenge. Section 1 had a very tricky entrance. with three possible lines. Two of tbe lines would almost surely require a dab while the l10e to take for a clean was especially tricky. On secl10n 3 the riders were faced with a good climb and a very tricky exit. About 20 feet from the "Secl1on Ends" card. riders made a gentle right turn over some vicious stones and then left over more rocks to reacb the exit. Half-way through traP 5 there was a small pUe of rocks. not parl1cularly , d1tf1cult to get over. but ooe had to attack them perfectly or he would not be 10 line for a narrow gap between two larger rocks. '!be sand wasb that made uP secl10n 6 did not' give too many riders problems, but Is worth meol1oo1og for a newly learned tecbo1que. When Sammy MUler Tim Hicol plunks tlwoueh the rock. on hi. Ossa. and Pedro Pi were quesl10ned concerning sand riding techniques, botb stressed the Importance of the rear brake. Il the bike weaves from side to side, they lightly drag the rear brake. This pulls tbe rear wheel down and straightens the b1ke. It takes some pracl1ce to knowhow much brake to apply, but the trtckworks very well. '!be last secl1on, number 8, Included a very d1W.cult climb with some giant sized and their riders wtll appear more closely related to tbe great unwashed public. hence more tolerated and accePted. Wasn't long ago that not too many Amertcaos knew whatISDT stood for, let alone wanted to go to it. The U.S. ts allowed 40 entries In tbe loteroal1ooal 6-Day Trial, 1ocludtog all teams and private riders. This y'eBr all the spaces are fllled and there 15 a standby list cit twenty more. One tb10g seems clear: somehow the riders that are to represent the U.S. will have to be selected. Selecl10n 00 the merit of ability would be tbe logical way but what events 10 tb1s country do we have that would be meao1ogful? The twoday Berkshire Trials Is the only one tbat comes to mind. . Word is that tbe Jackp10e will be changed enough to simulate 6-Days Trial cood1l100s. Neither of tbose, however. would help tbe west much so an event Is being p1aooed right here In the Sao Bernardino Mountains. U 10terest 10 this new d1recl1on of multiple day enduro/trials conl1nues, tbe sport shall be tbat much richer. A side benefit wU he our improved image with tbe general public. It's really one of Mr. Jeoo1ngs' better efforts and I encourage all to read it. It Is sbort enough to read ai the newsstand but" Car aod Driver" 15 good enough to buy on its own merit.
