Neckbreaker Kills Policeman ('0';5 Speedway To Hos' AMA Pro Racing SANTA MONICA, CAL. Aug. 22- Police motor otticer William Davidson, 31, was killed by a neckbreaJcer In the parking lot ot the Santa Monica courthouse while instructing a recrult in the operation of a 3.-wheeled motorcycle used by parking enforcement officers. Davidson started out ot the parking lot about 8:30 p.m. and talled to see the cbaln that had been drawn across the driveway. He was ilurled trom the macbine, the cbaln catching him in the cbest and sliding lIP under his cbIn. The driverless motorcycle continued across the street and smasbed into a bouse. The Hollywood Citizen-News reported the death as a "treak accident," but this is the tourth such tragedy to come to the attention ot Cycle News wilhln the past year. Every year tour or tivepeople In the west are k11led by neckbreakers similar to the one which got Officer Davidson. Througbout the U.S. sucb needless tragedies probably number over a dozen annuallY. Countless riders are seriously injured. EJCPerienced riders, novices, kids on m1n1bikes all are equally In danger as long as unmarked neckbreakers are allowed to exist. These senseless k11lings are usually listed as "trattic" accldents and retlect badly on the safety record of motorcycles. Then the bue and cry is tor more ..£~, \ laws to restrict motorcycle rldlng, as It the machine or rider were at tault. In the case of neckbreaJcers and most carmot'Jrcycle accidents, no amount of restrictive laws, compulsory protection, etc. ts going to have any eftec t on the death toll, except perhaps to worsen it througb neglect ot the real causes. Cycle News has said before, and we repeat: neckbreakers must be dangermarked. Invisible chains, wires, and cables stretcbed across a drive are nothing less than deathtraps. When will our lawmakers, who seem so eager to protect us trom our own rIsks, wake lIP to the dangling threat ot neckbreakers and pass a law to protect us trom the unconsciousness or mallce ot others? How many more blameless citizens wUl have to die betore someone realizes that the oniy thIng "freak" about neckbreaker killlngs is the way this manslaughter continues to be ignor.ed.
