Thirty-odd entries compiled the field, with spectators numbering over two hundred, perched above, on dirt hills, while the racers ran the grueling program. Best rille of the day was by Tim Kaiser, mounted on Bultacos, who rode both 125 and 250 classes. Kaiser won the 125 series easily, his onlY competition being Nick Rlchlen, Honda. Kaiser won all three heats, with Rlchlen close behind. Third heat found a wheelle contest between the two, with Kaiser In front. Kaiser rode a strong race In the 250 class, hut took only second place honors behind Tom Jones' fast Harley. Bobby WlllIams Beezered his way toa 500 Novice win ahead of Steve Shaw on his C- Z. In the any-thing-goes Open Expert chase Chuck Hatcher powered his Triumph to the checkered. The event was well run, and no Injuries occurred, which always makes for a good day. August 27 - Paul Conserrlere had his night of glory for himself and the Great Bear Racing Team as he fought off the bids of three of the top point riders to take his first 'A' main event win of the season. Rick Woods found himself In the 'B' maln as Paul beat him out In the Semi maln. By beatIng Woods In the Semi and Steve Bast, Sonny Nutter and Larry Helnselman In the maln event, Conserriere defeated the tour top point men In one evening. In his semi, Paul grabbed the lead right off the line. Although Woods was able to move up on Paul, he never quite made It Into strlldng distance and had to settle for a second place In a semlfor the second week In a row. Woods was determined to win the Trophy Dash and he and Sonny Nutter went the tlrst lap side by side and so close together that their elbows were overlapping. Woods was on the Inside and when Nutter drifted wide, Woods shot ahead tor the lead and his fourth dash win In a row and his ninth for the season•. In the 'C' main event, Morley surged ahead to pass Terry Graham, but Konle couldn't seem to !lnd the way around and dogged Terry'S rear wheel ·for the remainder of the race. The 'B' maln was action-packed as Rick Woods got a good start, so Instead of being behind Jim Gresham and MIke Bast, Rick went Into the first corner side by side with them. They hung together through the corner but coming out, Woods seemed to get a little more wheel to the ground and pulled ahead. Into the second corner, Jim Anderson who had taken the lead went wide and left a gigantic hole for Rick to sliP Into and Woods powered past and took the le:id and went on to win. In the 'A' Main,PaulConserrlererode one of his best races of the season. Although Paul was riding the high groove and leaving the pole wide open, it was all Larry Helnselman could do to keep UP. He tried unsuccesstully about three times to get Paul on the inside and finally had to settle for a second which gave the Great Bear team a 1-2 finish In the maln. (Results on page 20) Texas Challenger li"es At EI Toro ELTORO, CAL. August 27, 1969 - A yOllllg man named MIke Odem came up trom Texas last Wednesday night to cballeng'i! the ACA flat traclters aDd TT riders and gave some of the top rldersa real scare. MIke heat Jimmy Raymond, Tom Vardeman aDd Bob WtWams Jr. in the tropby dash tor the 250cc flat traclt event and almost won the main, On the tenth lap, be bad a little problem with the far _st corner aDd Jimmy Raymond was able to get UDder MIke for the wIn. bot jnst by a small margin, with Tom Vardeman ftnfshtng In third spot. MIke did the same thing In the 250cc TT event, DIlly this time Jimmy Raymond toot the I:roPb7 dash aDd Jimmy and Ray Va.nderpool be1d MIke off to a third SPOt. Tbe young man tram Texas was reaDy a cbarger and gave the local boys a hard go. Bob Wl1lIams Jr. has found the wa,y with the Yamaha 125cc. He was able to capture the 125ee short track trophy dash and also the main event, holding Jimmy Raymond to second spot and Steve Nichols to third. Jimmy pulled another little trick out of the hat and won the 500cc short track trophy dash and the main event, with MIke Hannon finishing In second spot and Dan Headrick In third. Jimmy pretty well did the same thing In the l25cc event, winning the TT trophy dash and the TT maln, with Steve Nichols In second place, and one of our top points leaders, Ron Taylor, running In third spot. In the 500cc TT trophy dash and maln event, Gary Jones on his BSA had no problems. Only one manchallengedGary I:n the big bore event and that was little MIke Payse on his 360cc Greeves. FInlshing In third spot was Bill Smith, also BSA mounted. With the season drawing to a finish, competition In the short track and TT events ls getting much keener. Next Wednesday night the riders go at It again at Orange County Speedway with quarter mile short track and TT. (Results on page 20)
