Mike Johnson, a three-year veteran of motorcycle racing at the ripe age of 15, took the Overall Trophy for best performance at two Golden Eagles motocrosses beld Aug. 10 and 17th near Dallas, Tex. Mike rides his 125 Sachs like a pro and had a perfect score - six firsts in as many races. The 100-125 class started oIf with a crWlch. Fifty yards from the starting line two bikes locked horns and five more ran over them. Austin's Ramon Dasch pursued the leader with vigor and even got to lead for a lap, but Johnson and his Sachs were not to be denied. Dasch took second in the class. ZWldappS dominated the 100 class. David Hickman and Randy Altman came home first and second in a field 01 seven riders. Remember the three Golden Eagles from North Little Rock, Ark. who said they'd be back with their buddies? They came back and took home three trophies for their efforts. Seems like Javelinas would be a better name for these boys. Javelinas are native to Arkansas and are vicious wild pigs with two sharp fangs who seem to rWl faster than you possibly can. In the 250 bash, Evered Terrell, Husky, and Kenneth Creasy, Bul, had it tooth and nail Wltil the last heat. Creasy led lap one with Terrell in fourth; Bob Whitehead, CZ, led lap two with Creasy in fourth; and Jim Smalling led laP three only to be passed by· Terrell for the finish and first place in that class. Creasy got second and Smalling, Husky, took third. SaI!1 Rogers, one of the Javelinas, collected one of the two broken front axles caused by the horritic jumP. replaced the axle and front wheel with one from a Penton, and took first in the open class. Sam was riding a Bultaco- Penton. Second in the Open class went to Robert Graham on a Matco while Gayle Bradley pushed his CZ to a third overall. Graham and Bradley would top the main jump at the same time and even collided once just before touching the groWld. Graham didn't lose his seat but Bradley did sort of a spinning slide in a sitting position, grabbed his still-rWlning motor, SPWl a doughnut, (a-la cowboy mounting his nervous horse) and caught Graham shortly. The races get better and better and the next two will be held September 14 and October 19. MOTOBCYCLB .... • •• .-.DOlO AnaACTlONS, I SATURDAY 9O·M,LE 250cc OPEN lOAD RACE.
