Showmanship Draws Fans To Marysville Photo and Story by Joan Powers MARSYVILLE, CAL. Aug. 16, 1969Triple M Speedway'had a turn away crowd at Marysville Saturday night at Eve1 Knievel thrilled the fans with colorful feats of daring and skill. The be1achers were filled to overflowing and the hosting Feather River M.C. was able to introduce AMA Sportsman racing to hundreds of Hub area residents who might not have otherwise come out. The club extends its thanks to Knievel for his performance but Evel wasn't the only showman on hand that night. The racers put on a circus that kept excitement at a high pitch. Slrancers when we meel. Ed (BIC Pumpkin) Brown bashfUlly crasps flO' somelhlnc callanl to say 10 Marysville's Coy Trophy Girl. , Young 100cc riders are toqghand wiry. Neil McDonal put his Hodaka through the fence last week at the Orland 1/2 miler, but came back tonight undaunted and took first in his event. Jack Eddings, also a boy with nerves of steel, didn't let Mc Donal take this event by any great margin. Eddings finished a close second. John Vance made his appearance for third. 125cc riders are getting very popular here and looking forward to the day their bikes are made legal. A sassy grouP these 125' s, they grOuPed together immediately over the jump and somehow managed to untangle themselves and proceed with the race. John Sasman got a grip on things and flew to the head of the pack. The action took place to his rear between Kenny Synder and Russ Davis. Synder played cat and mouse with Davis for a full five laPs, when much to his surprise his mount made the separation scant yards from the checker, letting Davis move to second place. A 200 Novice event got under way in a hurry. Leading the boys of! the line was Ed Brown. Brown maneuvered his Bultaco for two laps when suddenly something big happened. Moving into the first turn followed closely by Adams and Morrison, Brown left his bike high side in a spectacular crash. Adams took over the lead for the finish. Ke1 Morrison, a relatively newcomer to Marysville is now looking like a new champion as he is now starting to move up in competition. Kel took a non-paying second but we expect to see him in the money next week. As always the 200Amateur class draws many comments from the crowdS, some good and some bad. The point of argument seems to be little Jerry Willi,s. Jerry is a strapping 98 pound tiger who rides a latent Suzuki 100cc. The general consensus seems to be that Jerry has too big a handicap to overcome; that is, bigger bikes and older riders. But this little guy always seems to be in the winner circle, with the bigger boys headed back to the pits empty handed. Randy Dunn took this event fonowed by Jerry Willis in second place. New faces were seen in the winner's circle this week. Robert McCoy is back again and has really improved his riding style. Robert copped first honors in this 250 Novice class. Mike Williams is also looking very stylish as he swished in for second place. Not enough can be said for Daryle White and his new American Eagle. Daryle dropped his bike last week while attempting to pass the first spot rider on the very last laP. This week he held on to her and received third place. Randy Pean, is now in the groove and looks to be an upcoming threat. Randy grabbed fourth spOt. The 250 Amateurs are usually ii ttery and tonight wis no exception. After their usual restart Jim Denny sp1l1ed his Bultaco on the line. Taking a heavy lead was Pat Rooney moving ahead on all burners. Pat maintained his lead to the finish. A hotly contested trial between Rick Graves on a Yamaha and John Fite on a Bultaco caught the crowds attention. These boys were really mixing it up for second place. Rick Graves scratched out a small lead over Fite for second while Fite had to settle for third. Entries for the 250 Expert event were quite skimpy and not much of a contest as Gary Lozano rode easily ahead for first place. Hacks were here in profusion. Ever try to ride one of these three wheeled trikes? It's no easy chore, these hack riders are pOwer packed daredevils. A perfect rapport between pilot and co-pilot is absolutely mandatory. Separate thinking and opposite reactions can result in a nasty spill. James Fields and Larry Thompson set the example this night as they took a bad tumble while approaching the jump apron. The little bikes getaheadstartso they lead the field for several laps. Then the big boys started to inch forward. Bass and Bickerstaff on a Yamaha were on the first small bike to emerge. They led for several laps until Foreman and Kirby challenged. Bass and Bickerstaff wheeled high on turn four letting both Foreman-Kirby and Kenyon-Kr1l1 take the lead. Kenyon- Krlll went on to first place among the big hacks while BassBickerstaff took the small hack honors. In the Open Novice Tom Kennedy powered his Triumph out for the lead and as each lap progressed extended his lead to the end. John Borden, also Triumph mounted, fought off John Adams, Bultaco rider, for a well earned second position. The pipes were hot and the boys were jumping in the Open Expert go. A new rider on the scene really dusted the boys of!. Jay Cater riding a C- Z came from the middie of the group to move to the front of the class all the way to the finish. Dennis Dickerson was having problems keeping his Triumph under him. Several times the bike slid beneath him and threatened to dump him, but Dennis held on and moved into second place at the finish. August 23, 1969The Minor family of Sacramento had a winning night at the Short Track Motorcycle races at Sacramento Raceway Saturday, August 23rd. Dad Minor, Paul Sr. took the second place trophy in the 125 Amateur Class. Paul' Minor Jr. was the first place man in the 250 Amateur Division, and little brother John was the fastest of the Mini Bike riders. Paul Jr. is the current high point man in the 250 Amateur class and John has more wins on his Mini Bike than any of the other youngsters that participate in the races. Steve SharP, Santa Rosa, was the winner of the 250 Expert class followed by last week's winner John Green. Third place man was Sacramento's Jim Rodaer and fourth to George Carter. Carter was on the ten yard handicap line due to his past two wins. Sharp win now join Green and Ron Davies on the five yard line. Carter is the only rider other than Ralph Waldman to be able to garner more than one Victory. Waldman has a totai of six wins, he has never lost a main event in this class this season. Follo.wing Minor in the 250 Amateur class, was Gale Gibb, Ron Mattert, and Jerry Baugh of Ranch Cordova. The 250 Amateur class required some four starts to finally get underway. On the first start, atter the dust had cleared it was discovered that three of the riders had been held uP at the pit gate and were not even on the track. Wally Hewittson, Joe Brazll and Tom Christensen didn't feel that was quite the way to do things and starter Gary Willis black flagged the field and ordered a restart. With spills occuring on the next two starts it appeared that it would be quite some time before the race could be run, but the fourth time saw everyone off and running and Minor was able to work his way up from his fifteen yard handicap to take the win. Other winners included; Blll Whiteside 250 Novice, Del Silva 200 Amateur Expert, Fenn Pevier 200 Novice, Dennis Kniernan, 125 Novice, Bill Trumbull 100 Novice. The 125 Amateur final was taken by Terry Henry, 1st year high point 100 Novice. Henry has been unable to race practically all season due to a leg injury but made his return to the race trach winning one. (Results on page 20) ':. YAMAHA DEALER ., SCRAMBLER MOTORCYCLES 1801 W.
