In a prel1m1nary beat race the tension was too much and Woods, Bast and Nutter blasted througb the tapes before the gate went up thus disquallfylng themselves. As they roared througb the starting gate traWng the ribbons bebind them, Larry Hetnselman sat on the llne. the only rider not dtsquallfied. Some very spectacular spUls baPpened during the heat races as the riders were giving their all. In bis fifth heat race, Rick Woods was running away with it with Mike Bast In second and as Rick came out of the corner for the t1n1sb 1lne, be suddenly got traction with the rear wheel that be badn't expected and the macb1ne did a wheelle rigbt to witbtn four feet of the tlntsb 1lne. It pitched over backwards dropping Woods to the groUlld just a few feet short of Victory. Paul Conserriere added spice to the program with bis tront straigbtaway spill thatbad btm doing somersaults along the track to avoid being struck by the other riders. Tbe Trophy Dasb was another Rick Woods-Steve Bast duel. Steve took the lead rigbt away. Rick really pOured on the steam trying to catch Sieve, but Bast bad bu1lt ICl too mucb lead and lIOok the cbeckered flag well ahead of Rick. . • los Alge'es Spor's Arel. - . • Three Cylinder A Winner In AFM Three Hour ORANGE COUNTY RACEWAY, CAL., Aug. 31, 1969 - Ron Pierce and Tom Rockwood picked a three cyllnder for the AFM three hour production race at Orange County Raceway and their BSA did the trick taking home first place honors. The Rocket Three's closest competition was the Honda four cyllnder of Steve McLaughlin and Bob Beoder. Don Emde and Mike Valesco brought in their Yamaha ,350 for the class win ahead of the 500cc class winning Suzuki of Boyd Gardner and Jack Makepeace. In the 'C' MaIn, Woods looked better than he bad all night as be was tbtrd man out of the first corner with Paul Conserriere, tak1ng the lead with Ron Miller right beblnd bim. Rick quickly moved past Miller and before he bad a chance to pass Paul, Conserriere went wide out of the corner and bumped against the crasb wall and bad to shut ott which allowed Woods and Miller to pass bim easily. Woods went on to the win with Miller second as Paul recovered enougb to keep the tbtrd place position with Jim Gersbam taking fourth spOt. The 'B' MaIn got a llttle hairy at the start as Don Hawley, Steve Bast and Stu Morley took the tlrst lap in rather close formatioo and more or less kept each other trom going down. Steve pulled away with Stu dropping Into the second slot. Don Hawley stayed ahead of Mile Konle until be went wide. On tbts quick course, one llttle boo-boo and the rider bebind you is suddenly the rider In tront of you. Konle grabbed the tbtrd slot and beld it to the tlntsb. The 'A' MaIn proVided the most position changes In any race during the evening. Tbe top four pOint men for the evening llned uP for their Handicap start. As the starting gate shot uP, Swede Savage took the lead by virtue of starting In front and be was trying to take advantage of it as Sonny Nutter and Mike Bast were baYing a side by side duel rigbt beblnd btm. As Sonny and Mike moved up on Savage, Nutter bad to back off as Bast passed Savage and then Nutter passed Swede right bebind Mike.Swedewasbaving a little d1tticulty in the corner and Heinselman took advantage of it to slip by and set bis sigbts on Nutter wbo was still trying to catch Mike Bast but baVing no luck. Larry moved up on Sonny and went into the corner b1gh and came out low and passed into the second place spOt but Nutter did the same thing to b1m on the next corner and took it back. Helnselman again slipped past Nutter the same way and then the crowd went wtld. Sonny retook the second slot in the same place and the same way be did it before. Young Mike Bast took the win £0 make it a good nigbt. He is leading In the cbampionsbtp, and proved that it wasn't luck by coming back to take the'A' MaIn: The second round will be held on Sunday night, September 7, so it youbaven't caugbt tbts sbow at the Los Angeles Sparts Arena, don't miss it. (Results on page 20) The winners; In a more relaxed mood. McLaughlin and Dave Damron put the American Eagle 175 across first In the I bour race for under 200cc bikes. Two 200cc Bridgestones followed and back there somewhere Ed Kelley and Don Wicks got the 50cc crown with a Tarbo. A ride that caugbt the attention of a lot of people was the drive made by CecU Oswald and Cbuck Wicklltte wbolostttve laps after their 500cc Ka wasak1 Three contacted another bike in the b1ll turn. In a frantic catch-up effort they aIpped the class w1nn1ng 500 twice but ran out of time to try for the win. (Results on page 20)
