Oxford Backs Bakersfield Attack On Utah Hill Scramblin' Around By Maureen Lee Callf.nlans were awed by tile Utah hili. It ... owed a bit much I. this IIptwel,ht rider. Photo and story by Margie Oxford SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, Aug. 17 - In tile mounta1ns near Salt LaJro City, Utah tile Salt Lake M.C. threw - .• event on tile most beautiful and fanta-dc 690 foot btll ever to be used for bt11cltmblng. No one ever made It ewer the top. The btgbest point reacbed was 553 feet turned In bY Exbtbltton class wtnner Dick Oxford of Bakerstteld, Caltfornla. . The HWcltmb drew riders from Caltfornla, Oregon and Nevada. Spectators by the thousand flocked at the bottom of the btll. TIle Salt Lake cltmbers may have been sbocked bY the West Coasters and their wt1d macbtnery but the outsiders were just as startled by the towering btll and the 8000 foot elevation. What the CaltforDians would have given to have some rlcb carburetor jets. More than gracious In their sharing of tools and parts, the Salt Lake club saw to it that every rider bad a fair chance at the btll. The Exhibition class runs were started In near darkness and pouring rain. Eacb rider was given two runs. The contest was wide open. Chains, tule - anythtng went. Mud was flytng everywhere. In the roar of the engines under the drenching rain no one cared. Whoever pulled uP to the ltne ttrst took his spinning, rearing run for tile toP until the power was drained and gravity bad ber way. Harley-Davidson pusbed Dtck Oxford blgber than his close competitors and be took honors for tile top cltmb of the day. S1xt:y- three year old Deanne KIngsford, "The Old Man of the Mounta1ns" from Ogden, Utah won a ttrst In the 125 class followed by anotber Ogden boy, Eric Gray. The 800 rntle trip rewarded Clayton CaUett of Be.kerstteld with a ttrst in tile 250 class. Oxford was second on his Honcia and two local lads were third and fourth. The Utah riders were used to the elevation and muddy traction but in the 360 class Preston Gerber setlled for a second bebtnd Roger Voyles of Bakerstte1d. Caltfornla's Mel Cunba got the brass In the 500 class wbUe Lowell Chambers of Utah was second. The northern Caltfornia riders bad trouble making up for the elevation. San Jose rider Tommy Burnett took a third in the Open B class. First and second were Oxford and Jobn Talhurs; His beasUy OOA won the OPen A event for Frank Durso. Just beblDd bim was Kent Kjezarin of Provo. . Later, In the lantern ltgbted bunk bouse .sealed off from the storm, beers, cheers and awards were passed out. It was a great clay for everyone and the out or state bt1lcltmbers said they would make the trip again; not only for the event but for the fun and enthusiasm they enjoyed th1s time. "FEETS" REPORTS We've beard from Cbuck M1Dert and it·s obvious that bts European trip is a great success. We can·t wait to get the whole story from bim and know be' s made many friends for America with his easy going personaltty. Her's part of what be says, " •••The works BSA's are wonderful rnacbtnes, ligbt and fast! I've got the run of the factory and am having the time of my ltfe." Feels' loyalty to Beezers is well known and we bope be brings back one of their super- jobbies. Under current AMA rules, a works bike is legal for scrambles even if it's the only one In captiVity! His performances on aplatn 01' Victor are tremendous, just think what be'd do on a works bike. {All right 500 Expert class, stop screaming, I didn't say be was bringing one back, just what I bope be is!) One of the things District 37 is going to petition for at this year's Competl.tlon Congress is tile reversal or tile rule not allowing a rider to ride two classes In one division. District 37 is allowing riders to ride as many classes astlleywisb In each division but It Is still In tile national rule book as a IIO-no. So we'd ltke to comment a ltttle bit on tilts rule, and about what local riders tbIDk about it. When tile current rule bookcameoutit &book quite a few ~ when tIIey found out about it especially riders with a shoP bebtnd them. Most riders don·t have two bikes so tIIey don·t care but feel that if you are lucky enougb to have two scooters, why shouldn·t you be allowed to ride them? After all, it gives two sets of entry fees to the host club and gives the rider two chances at points, although you only 'LITTLE FAUSE AND BIG HALSY' Paramount Studios in Hollywood will use Avon motorcycle tires in a forthcoming picture about cycle racing, it was announced by the Hap Jones distributing Company, U.S. distributor for the Britisb made tires. The film, currenUy tlUed "LitUe Fause & Big Halsy" 15 now in production and will star RobertRedford and Michael Pollard. Paramount has budgeted more than $3,000,000 for the film and bas developed special camera mounts for the cycles to record the spectacular racing scenes. The movie is scbeduled to nationwide release in Marcb or 1970. Avon'S famous "green spot" racing tires will equip the principal cycles in -------- --------- SACHS TRAIL BIKES get paid points for the best or your rides. If the trusty 250 blows and you got a second in the lOOCc class, why worry? You still get points, a 1d maybe we're wrong, but we feel that tilts is why that rule was not put into effect. For all the arguments against the AMA there Is one tlltng you have to admire them for and that 15 they have always tried to keep tile Sportsmen events "sporting" but not giving advantages to those with money. That· s why regulations on equipment have always been strict (uP til now anyway) so that chaps with money could not buy a "super" bike and race it against what most of us can afford, a racing "stocker," andblowusall In the' weeds. In tilts particular case, those fortunate enough to be either sponsored on two bikes or rlcb enougb to afford them have a distinct advantage point-wise over those who can't. Itlooks pretty obvious that the AMA thougbt this an unfair advantage. So there you are with the two sides of the story. Our opinion? Well, we would rather not say as we're getting pretty tired of getting alternately glared at or srntled at dependtng on what we've written about that week! But fair 15 fair, rigbt? The ligbtweigbt point situation 15 going to have some changes we didn·t foresee earlter. Larry Taylor, wbo bad the number one plate In tile bag baring compltcations, ran Into one of those compltcations Saturday night. The ground! How long he'll be out with a broken shoulder we don't know but he did have a tremendous point lesd butlt uP, so keeP pu11lDg for btm. He's done a tremendous job this season and all unassistedl In the ultra-ltgbtwelghtdivtston Troy McKee 15 ltterallY breathtng down steve Nichols neck! Only five points separated them a week ago so there's a hatlle to watcb. Who will get the ttrst num~r one ultra-ltgbtweigbt plate? the major racing events, wbtcb will include the Sears Point National Road Races in early September.
