Green. Platers By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Sat. & Sun., Aug. 16,1~ Every spectator got his fill of racing at Perris this weekend and saw riders and bikes put to the test. The Saturday night crowd saw an exhibition of trick riding when Roger Osborn, riding a 125cc Yamaha, lostcontrol going over the jump which caused his feet to go past his ears and on the triP down they both landed on the left side of his bike and by some miracle of fate he was still aboard. With more clam than the people watching, he steered through the sweeper, still riding sidesaddle, slowed down, mounted back up and poured the coal to her. Never once did his feet touch the ground. The reason he does so well in the air is that he is majoring in Flight Training and in eight more months will have an Instructor Rating. He has the cool for it. Cycle racing is his way of relaxing so he has no ambitions for Ascot. Rob Morrison used some sly tactics to get folks to the track to see what it was all about. A year ago on Mother's Day he took Mom out and "Out" was to Perris to watch the Powder Puffs go at it. Rob has a little Cimatti with a red metal flake seat and a tiny chrome custom tank. A B-average studnent in high school, he has loaded UP with machine shop so that he can turn his stock bike into something really hot. Rob is so hung UP on motorcycles that his mom told me he wants to be a bike cop and then he can be on one all the time. His aspirations are Ascot and then Daytona and for someone who felt his folks weren't too with it concerning the sport, have I got a nash for him. If they were any more with it they would live, breathe, eat and sleep cycles. Danny Jones (no relation) has been racing on and off for four years and for him it is just a hobby. In 1968he managed to win the Tti-State Championship in Bakersfield so he takes it pretty seriously. Danny is another one whose wife makes a pretty spot in the gallery. In regards to riding, Kay said she did all hers in the stands rooting for her husband. His parents can't say much one way or another as they live in Italy where Mr. Jones is superintendent for an oU drUling firm. Must make an apology to Bill Grey as I erroneously printed he rode a red Suzuki and in fact it is an orange Yamaha. Twenty lashes with a wet throttle cable for me. Bill will be out of action for about six months because of an accident at Huntington Beach where he received a broken bone in his hand. To add insult to injury, after he crashed his friendly rival Rodney Parsons crashed into him. Dough Mcintyre, another member of the "Garden Grove Mafia", made it tQo late to race Saturday night but was there in plenty of time for Sunday. Doug works for Southland Cycle Center and attends Golden West J.C. where he is majoring in drafting. He got started racing when he got tired of watching all his friends race and now he can hardly wai t to get tx:> Ascot. B11l Dobbs is floating these days and with good reason. The Sport Spot has sponsored B11l and a new 250Cc Suzuki is his new mount. John Jones, gave his grandmother, visiting from Oregon, a nice birthday present Saturday night by winning the 500Cc Novice class. It was Grandma's first triP to the races and she could become quite a racing buff as every time I stopped by she was right at the fence taking it all in. By the way, it was grandma'S seventieth birthday so you're never too old to get the racing bug. Bob Kline had a double win Saturday night. He climbed aboard brother Jim'S Suzuki and took the 100cc class and turned around and mounted his American Eagle to run his win streak to eight in the 250Cc class. One consolation for the 250 riders, Bob'S mom said they were going on vacation next week. Sunday was a day in which you would be hard put to decide which was worsethe heat or the dust. It could have been worse though, as the water truck broke down and thank you, thank you, thank you to the people who worked during the night to get it fiXed. The H11Itoppers really gave it to the racers with a reverse course llJ)d to make it really tough, the riders only rode one race but it was ten laps over the long course' The scene in the pits looked more like the process one would go through before attempting a walk across Death Valley. Riders were soaking their boots, wrapping wet T-shirts around their necks and soaking their heads under faucets. Helmets saw ice dropped into them and they were also wrapped in something wet. Anything to keep the heat down as long as possible. Sno-Cones had to be the biggest selling item of the day. If you think it was bad before the race you should have seen them after. A special congratulation goes to Robert Sanders who by winning the 100cc Novice class Sunday should have enough points to grapuate to a yellow plate. Bob has been a steadY competitor at Perris and several other tracks in the Southern California area. He almost didn't make the point run as he messed UP his piston and his dad had to work it over and hope for the best. The best was to be and his blue Kawasaki did the job. Good luck with your new plate, Bob. The Green Platers have lost a good rider and the yellow platers better look out. C&H of Riverside picked a winner when they sponsored Bob. ThreeVe'sRace ToAsco' Wire TIlED Of It's been a big season at Ascot Park for first-year expeet riders, but chances are three veterans are going to battle down to the wire for the 1969 champion- GO The trio of "Shorty" Seabourne, Sammy Tanner and Mel Lacher are the leading threats as the motorcycle riders prepare for Friday evening's (Aug. 29) meet at the Gardena course. First event is at 8:30. Seabourne has been the leader most of the campaign despite being sidelined for more than a month recenlly with injuries. The little Lawndale rider has returned in top form and is definitely the man to beat for the croWD. Tanner is a living legend at the 183rd and Vermont Avenue half-mUe layout, where he soon will be after his 400th lifetime win. Sammy again is riding in top form after experiencing an Off-year in 1968. Lacher, the recent chemistry graduate from San Diego State, has remained in a contending position despite an up-anddown year. He has had more than his share of mech;Ln1cal difficulty. "'Et.e«-titatt." First Castor lube that leaves no carburetor or crankcase deposits.
