Besides names like Gary Batley, BtllSilvertborn, Ron Nelson, John DeSoto, Lars Larson, and Mike RUII)'al'd, 275 otfler motocross enlbusfasts sbowed up to ride. The starting area ended in a sandY left corner wlI1ch is wbere a few races ended. From here the course led through severaI cambered turns, up a steep wash and down over a small hill. A left turn here took the riders. to the "goat's tra11" can:ed in the side of a'hill. Off the lra11 Silverthorn going ahead but he was pushed constantly by Lars Larson and on his heels was Mike RUII)'al'd. From last, Batley moved up to fifth behind Gene Cannady. The second race turned into bad luck for Silverthorn and Larson as they tangled. Canady got In front and Silverthorn couldn't come back for more than second. Cannady didn't slack off a bit, taking the first race and first overall. Silverthorn barely hung on the last race but took second overall just ahead of Lars Larson. With the 125's done for the day, the big 500' s moved UP. then with a mighl;y swollen ankle but he came back for the restart and led for two laps before his hurts began to tell. Raudman, followed by Ba11ey squeaked by. Not until the last few yards did Bailey take Raudman and the win for the day. DeSoto dropped back 10 fifth. He lett without getting his third overall prize money. Next came the 250 class, in division 1 John Ribber took two seconds and a third for first overall. Beating him twice was Rick Norris whose first race performance was lacking. In the second division Jim 0' Neal guided his CZ to three straight wins just ahead of Ron Bird with three seconds. The hard fought battle was for third place with James Exler ahead of Bob Moore for two races and then Exler dropped back far enough to make Moore's consistent riding good for. third overall. The 250 seniors class was another battle of battles. Bailey was pushed hard by Runyard In the first race and succumbed 10 Jim West in the second. (West gave Bailey a hard time last week). K. Kato was uP and down In the first race for fifth but got better each race by one position. Bailey and West had at It again in the third race with Bailey just edging West. The benefit race turned out the largest crowd yet at Bay Mare according 10 Dave Groves, promoter. It was also the first time that the local press co-operated with advance pubUcil;y and the CarmarUlo Dailey News had a Monday morning scoop and some tine pictures. Can motocross be catching on? Experts like BIl1ley lifted their front wheel here and kept it uP clear to bottom. Around a tree and sweeping fast right and again left found the riders coming over a sharp jumP. Two more turns, one uphill and one downh1ll, precede the m 00hole. Once out of the grease everyone started Into their next lap. The 125 class, division 1, lined up at 8:30. In each race the lead sh1ftedalmost constantly. Burt Severy took a second in the first race behind a hard charging AI WurtzeI. in their second race they fell way back with David Garber taking first and Dennis Chandier following second. The third event ended in the same way and so did the days totals. In division 2, Mark Cook kept his Bultaco upright to take two first and a second behind Richard Foshay. Foshay to the first, a second and a fourth to take home the days second place title. The 125 senior' class started with Bill 01 the 250 Expertl' rear wh•• ls In the Ilr. NobodY but nobody could come close For to Bob Steffan's Matco. He led from line to line each race. Consistent riding Carl Cotton stayed in for two third and a fifth wlI1ch was gand enough to earn second overall. The course took a big toll In machines. Twenty 500 seniors lined up and for the first two corners stayed even. Bailey got out in front there and stayed when hard luck Nelson got tangled UP. Lonnie Peterson jumped In behind BIl1ley and TIm Hart came from seventh to third. It all let loose in the second molo with Batley dashing just ahead of Jolin DeSoto. For twenty minutes everyone held their breath lest the whole track ellPlode. Peterson managed a third this time. With the competition stitt the start was a major part of the race and they all jumped the flag on the third event. That's where the trouble startedl ROn Nelson and John DeSoto tangled hard in the second turn. Nelson was taken to the hospital with a broken leg.
