********************************-******** • y I L e. es T 0 anfo ****************************************. Light By Jack HANFORD, CALIF. August 8, 1969 - On this b81my summer n1c.o1It, the T.T. Scrambles proved to be a fine draw1Dg sporting event, not only for the many riders, but for the huge crowd of excited spectators which f11led the 51x grandstands. The Kings County Motorcycle Club have the support of the localpeople who turn out to witness the spectacular races presented twice monthly during the season. The light-weights started the evenlng actlvitles, and to best describe these small bore machines, and riders, who are not always so small, ts to picture a swarm of bumbl.e-bees In a laI:ge jar, and when the flag ts drOPped, as a lid belng removed, watch out, because anyth1ng can haPpen, and 1t usually does. The track literally swarms with blkes and riders, and unt1I the pack th1ns outa little, the jockeylng for po51tlons ts wtld. The 90 Novlce class was typical, with ten riders at the start, and these g1lyS all .. go for broke" • Nell MacDonald with his Moto- Beta successfully out did the rest of the bees-ln-the-bottle so to speak, with Kirby Shorpshire and his Ka wasak1 pushing for second, folloW'i!d by Jeff Davidson for third. Jack Jones astride a Suzuki was the victor In the 90 Amateur class, with Gary Maulden, Moto- Beta, and Bob Muller, Hodalca, crossing for second, and third. The 125cc hikes were next up (and some down) turnlng extremelyfastt1mes for the evenlng, with Danny Summer1en and his Yamaha taking flrstln the Novice dlv1s1on. Mentlon must be made here of a very young, and a very small In size gentlemen, with the GUTS of a GIANT, Tiny Kim Ehorpshire, In his first outing s1nce a serlons accident side-lined him the past few months with a foot lnJury. Kim was caught In heavY tramc, with no place to go, but down, with blkes and riders, around, on top, and just about everywhere else. KIm was. shaken, but still wanted to go back out, but good judgement was shown In allow1Dg amuch deserved reet for the balance of the evenlng·. You can't keeP a good man down, and he wUl be back, better than ever. Teen-agar Mike Lane repeated his performance of last week In Be.kersfield, with another twin win, first on the Shafter Yamaha 125 blke In the Expert, and coming back later, to capute the wild and furious 250 Expert on his larger Yamaha. Avery Hensley and Albert Nystrom followed MIke across In the 125 Amateur & Expert, both riding Bultacos. The 250 Expert second and third places went to George Holland, Kawasaki, and Herschel Spurlock and his Bultaco. These two races, with many riders In each event, proved thts sport not to be for the falnt-hearted, nor Is this track for those who want to be alone. The crowd In the stands had noth1ng over the crowd of racers on the track, both were jammed. Carl Nelson and his C-Z looked real good In nosing out the Bultacos of Leonard Reed and Steve Snider In the 250 Amateur. The 375 NOvice class with the massive Matco of'Dale Medford taking 'the checkered, followed by Jack Dodds and his Bultaco, with another Marco ridden by Henry Patr.1ck for second and third spots. In the humble op1n1on of the writer, 1t is good to see more and more of these motocross type blkes entered, and w1nnlng the T.T. scrambles events. The rl».r1ng, earth shaking, big jobs next were called out from the pits, with Don Harrell, BSA, w1nnlng the 500 Am. closely followed by Zeek Charest and his Matco, with always hard riding Stan AbovI, IIlkl Lane took two bll wins It Hlnford Frldl' niIM. The 650 classes provlded exercise for the BSA, Trlumphs, andon~ Matchless machines. These riders show tremendous skill In handling these "brutes. Alan Hayden, BSA, won the 650 Nov. followed by l2Ie beaut1fu1 red BSA of Ed Wl1l1ams for second, with Jim O'Hara and his Matchless third. The close fought three way duel of the 650 115-- ~ II Results , r H If i' b'e , I Ii e Am. found all riders Triumph mounted, with Jim Lawler, Stan Nunes and Virgil Flanery best1ng lbe balance of the field. The final 650 Expert go around, proved everything working In the favor of Darrell McCaulley and his BSA, as he took the checkered, with Gene Chandler and David Rogers and their Triumphs, for well deserved second and thlrdposltlons.
