Marysville - Night Of Upsets Green Platers By EIa1De Jones - PERRIS, CAL., Sat. Nlgbt Aug. 2, 1969 - 'lbe regular Perris riders are uP In arms about tbe numerous raps tbe track bas been recelvlng In the paper lately. Consequently, I feel tbeir views should be made known. 'Ibe bestdefensewastbe turn out Saturday which was close to 125 riders. Whoever comp1alns lI.bout long waJts between races Is out to lunch, because tbe heats startedatelghto'clock and fln1shed at 11:15. Try tbat sometime. No one I talked wltb could understand tbe person who comp1alned about tbe track being bumpy and sandy and no good for 40 Inchers. Jim Hunter can't be classified as a slouch In anybody's book and he has raced Perris for years. It would be interesting to know how many times tbe riders who knocked Perris have raced It and how many times tbey placed. After maklng various comments about tbe Greenstreets It's about time you all learned more about tbem. Bob started ~Ing when Ascot was opened to riders under 18. When he was 13 he saw his best friend kUled and gave It uP until a year and a half ago. Last year he won tbe Novlce high polnt trophy and has only missed three Saturday nights since he'S been r1d1ng Perris. Whennot~1ng he bu1lds swimming pools and messes around wltb some flberglass work. Dottle, Bob's wife, Is equally as busy as she Is mother to three ch11dren and makes leatbers for Bob and anyone who wants tbem for a price. Dottle Is also credited witb helping to keep Perris open when tbe Chamber of Commerce tried to close tbem down. Dottle would like to ~e but slnce she just became a motber again she feels It Is best to waJt untll Junior Is older so will hold off untll next year. Unllke most riders Bob does not want to race Ascot but wants to turn tbe green plate Into a white one and tbat for him Is tbe toP. Let'sface It, he's already raced Ascot. BID Gray has been racing for two months and Is coming right along. According to friends his Dad sponsored tbe bike but BID sponsors tbe parts and his racing. Dad Is chief mechanic and comes along but Mom Is too nervous so she stays home. BID had some bad luck Saturday night when his condenser went out and he couldn't flnd anotber one. One tb1ng about BID and all Green Platers Is tbelr determination. He wasn't able to even fln1sh one heat but he said he'd be back next week. Besides that he has a friendly famlly fued" going wltb his cousin Keltb Huetb. BID rides a 125cc Suzuk1 and Keltb a brand new 12Scc Bultaco. Need I say more. Keltb Is one of tbose angry people I was talking about. Be stormed uP to me and started rapping about how phony I and tbe column were because he had won the week before and I hadn't listed his name. Had a beck of a time trying to expJa.ln tbat tbe column format had been changed. When flnal]y calmed down he was very easy to get along witb. He also hails from Garden Grove and 1lke sm has only been racing two months. His Dad l1Ices his choice of sports but Mom hates it so she stays home. Sorry sm, but Keltb Is one uP 011 you as he placed fourth saturday. Keltb also has a friendly feud going wltb his nelghbor Rodney Parsons. Keltb rot his Bultaco last Monday and Rodney rot his Friday. Rodney Is leading In tbls feud as he placed tbird saturday. ~od started rldlnC wilen he was nlne and became Interested through a netehbor who like to trail ride. Like Keltb and sm he has been racq two months so these Garden Grove kids "are providing Perris wltb some iood competitors. F or Rodney his Bultaco Is hls second racing bike and he has moved uP a class. His parents 1lke the sport but Mom can't staDd to watx:b. Dad like most, Is the" mecllan1c. When you see twin red Boltacos and a red SUZUki pullin, look out. It's the "Garden Grove Mafla". 'lbe next tlme anybody talb down cycle racing and racers lnvlte them out and let them see famWes enjoying each otber and no generation gap. In how many sports can you be a team without competing against one anotber? For tbose keMPlng score saturday nlcht, Bob Kline and Bob Sanders made it six In a row. (Results on pece 26) By Ed and Joan Powers MARYSVILLE, CAL., July 26, 1969New faces and machines lined uP saturday n1ght to wrestle tbe brass away from the tracks polnt leaders. In almost every class, previous winners were seen taklng back seats to a new crop of able riders. Track ctf1c1als altering of the course proved to be the undoing of tbose riders having tbe system down pat. 'lbe heats ran slow as tbe confldent riders watched and cataloged tbelr new competition, with tbe exception of tbe 125 Novice bunch, who after two restarts found a considerable number of men and machines unable to continue. Frank Rasuro of Winters put his suPer tuned Hodllka In front of tbe 100cc Novice class easlly and stayed tbere, wh1le Jack Eddings (Hodllka) pushed his bike hard for a clean second. 'Ibird brass went to Randy Eddings, followed closely by Charles Giese for fourtb spot. Mixed emotions were tbe order of tbe n1ght In tbe 100-200 Am. class. Power was tbe lI.dvant&ge In this class, as Randy Dunn of Davis on his Bultaco nosed ahead of tbe pack early and remalned tbere tbe duration. Competition came from Don Gentile of Grass Valley (Honda). Don was a consistent source of concern In the Novice Class and now looks to be even more so In hlsAmateur standing. 250 Experts were really hot ton1ght. "Gary Lazano (Bu!) and John Green(Kaw) hIg~hted this scorcher. After swapping tbe lead several times and scraPing paint off tbe retalner walls, tbe end came all to soon. Out of tbe last sweeper charged Lazano slidlng and crossed uP. Green was doing tbe same only higher On the bank. At tbe last moment LazaRo missed a gear and Green took tbe checkered. The Marysville rleors clearly show In this hack passenee" face. SIDE HACKS Hazards plagued tbe hacks this nlght. 'lbe SuPer Hack of Forman and Kirby acquired an Illness during the heat and never fully recovered. 'Ibat same Wness also pread to tbe Suzuki of Bass & Bickerstaff. Botb hacks went fortb val1antly to tbe maIn, but to no avall. Hack riders Kenyon and KrID moved up fast on the side hacks and edged past on tbe straight aways. But not wltboutsome hard riding on tbe corners, where tbey were held off by tbe sick hacks. :J50-1SOO NOVICI:. 'lbe flag dropped and John Foreman was In first place from beg1nn1ng to end. 'lbe white leatbered Mike Sandrla of San Francisco nursed his rebellious Triumph uP to second spot, following closely by Ron Pecks Honda of Chico. :SOO-6~ AM.-EX. 'lbese hairy riders lost no time In" settlng uP positions; Charley Stewart of Reno stepPed Into flrst spot, Jay Agrl1ey of San Francisco set UP a second spot and Kelly Hudson of Vallejo charged Into third position. John Green of Carmichael took flrst In tbe 15 lap Special wltb Robert McCoy second and John Fite tbird. Eight year old Bob Moore caPtured his flrst trophy In tbe Mln1 Bike race. T •••er Stops Se••or.e's let.r.8i" By DewItt 'lbuett Pbotos by Eric Ralts GARDENA, CALIF. August 8, 1969F -a-n-t-a-s-t-I-.c...tbat Is what more than one Ascoter uttered on tbe way out of tbe Gardena 0Ya1 on Friday night. It was a fantastic n1ght In many ways and In more races than one. Botb the expert and tbe novice flna1s started and finished nearly a11ke - wltb riders nearly climbing over each otber to win tbe events. sammy Tanner, Short;y Seabourne and Ron KTuseman put on a three rider show In tbe big h1ke flnaI that a person w11l never see at a national championship. liE Sammy Tan...r won tile TrophJ Dash lar the second wHk In a Don Emde and John Rateley did the same ,ft. tblni In the novlce flna1 and rode the way, experts, bot novlces, are s\GlPOsed to ride. Seabourne returned to action for the flrst time slnce earIy July when he took one of his famous "Headers" at tbe San Jose National. It was obvious that Short;y was ready to CO as he beat out his partner, Tom Rockwood, for fast tlme In the Tr1a1s wltb Tom second fast. To prove that a well aced rider can stlll compete against the YOUDC Brigade this year, Sbort;y tore ql Sammy Tanner In the heat race to make it two stralgbt before tbe Dash and Final. 'lbe other heat found Kruseman and his Norton 750 out hors1ngRockwoodand his BSA 500 In another wheel swapper. 'lben Tanner decided to get moving on his Enf1eld 500. 'Ibis tlme Rookie Alex Ch1nowskl and his Trlumpb took UP the challenge wltb SeaboUrne and Rockwood playing back-uP. Ch1nowskl aPpeared to have it on three OCcas1ODS but it was the experienced Tanner In for hls second Don (135') Emele put the stoppers to John (173) Hateley for only the lecond time IlnceJune 27th. The Emde-Hateley duel looked like Itrapplne Siamele twins on rolle' lkatel. straight Dash win and tb1rd of tbe season. 'lbe maln event has to rank witb one of the five or ten best ever run. Tanner led, Kruseman was always Inches back Seabourne came from tbe back to catch and pass, catcb and pass. Tanner gave Short;y and Ron chance after chance on tbe inside but tbe outside was worldng for Ascot> s all time winner and tbe three riders witb a total of four cylinders made it a flfteen lap dash from start to fln1sb. Seabournelowon tbepole, Kruseman down tbe middle and Sammy In his fam1l1ar high and wide outside groove. What a nee and what a shawl! Last week's w1nner, Rockwood, came from the back to close to fOlD'tb positioo but was too late to get uP wltb tbe three rider mob scene and flnished fourtb. Ch1nowskl, after early lap amhitlons, fln1shed In flftb. Freddie Edwards, the novice polnt leader, Is stlll hack east and both Emde and Rateleyare more than awareoftbls. Emde wins an elimination heat race. Rate1ey teams up to beat Emde In the regulation heat race. All even rotng Into the flnal. To say tbat tbese two are evenly matched riders, botb Suzuki mounted, Is an understatement. 'lbere are no two finer, faster or smoother 0Ya1 track novice riders In tbe nation tbls year. Emde was flrst Into the turn In the 250 flnal but Rateley, for the entire eight laps, was eltber trying to pass on tbe Inside or tbe outside and was never further tban ooe length behind. 'lbese two riders have won every novIce maln event at Ascot slnce the end of June and looked 1lke a Sidehack team rather tban two separate riders trying to beat eacb other. It was Emde at tbe fln1sb llne by half a ,length. He is the only rider to stoP RateleY since June 27tb and be has now done It twice. Two fine riders and as good a race as a cycle fan wl1l see on any track. " It all happens weekly on Friday nlchts at Ascot. 'Ibe w1nnlni cast wl1l be back again this week. Tanner now has 386 career half mile victories. 'Ibe way he is runnlng tbe 400 mark Is now In sight for this year • (Results on page 26) Veteran Sam Ituck to the hleh aroove while Shorty Seaborne cOllvalesced from his San Jose 'nj..y by nearly beatlne Tanne' to the checkered flae. Shorty Itlll leadl Tan_ and llel Lacher lolhe Asco! points race.
