By the end of the first loop Bob had dropped Into fourth place due to an unexpected sand wash which slowed him down. Taking the lead at this point was Terry Gagnon also riding a Hodaka. Coming In from the third loop Gagnon still held his first place position. Riding a Hodaka with Bob Fisher now holding a strong slxtbplace. Coming Into the finish, these three riders retained their positions. EARLY LEADER MISSES COURSE Russ Shaw riding a Yamaha In the 250cc race was the first rider out of the hole and holding a good strong lead when he missed the course by about 50 feet heading due south for Los Angles. This small error cost Russ 13 positions b~t1t didn't slow him down too long because within the first loop he picked UP 10 positions which gave him a third place all the way to the finish. The Novice cour se was fast but not as simple as it may sound. There was quite an assortment of obstacles along this course, such as a downhill with rather large holes in it, about two miles of sand wash, a small set of hoop- deedoos a little past the start. Flnally, the big bikes got their turn to show off a little. Leading the pack through the first loop was Butch Broman who later crashed on the dOwnh1ll. Butch's mlshop enabled Bob Duncan to take over the lead. Bob, winner of the big bike race on his Husky was asked what he thought of the novice course. His reply: "Just bltchln"! (Results on page 26) MOJA VE, CALIF. August 10·- The Jackrabbi ts picked one ot the better areas In the desert, just three miles north of Moj1ve. There were two courses of tour miles each. The Novices had their course on the left of the pits and the Amateur Expert ground was on the right. It was starting to get hot, as the 250 Amateur and Experts llned UP and the tight course of UP and down hog backs and deep, twisting sandwashes would really be a test of the riders stamina. After the start Larry Mulockona Yamaha tuned by Ridgecrest Honda held the lead all the way to the first down hill but he did a big thing and lost the lead to Tom Poteet on a Bultaco who really turned tt on and moved out to come in tor the win after seven laps. Mike Patrick and Tom Muto #5y were havtng a battle tor second spot. They both bobbled at the bottom ot the hlll at the t1n1sh llne and -had to blast up wheel to wheel In low gear, the legs and teet were flying and Patrick won by three feet on his Yamaha. Muto was third on his Husky. George Zuber #By pulled In fourth and Larry Mulack got UP to f1n1sh fltth. In the Amateur-Expert 100cc race Wes Anderson Jr. on a Harley Davidson had the lead at the second hill, Number One Jack Morgan on a Hodaka was second. The leader dusting through the pits after the first lap was Jeff Wright on a SS Hodaka who ·bad moved UP from eighth. Wright stretched his lead and came In for the win with plenty of room to spare. Morgan was secondandAnderSOIl was third. Dean Goldsmith on a Harley Davidson was fourth and JIm Summers on a Hodaka was filth. The Combined Amateur-Expert, 500 and Open riders were flagged off at 11:00 a.m. Rich Thorwaldson on a Bultaco was the leader at the second hill and Larry Bergquist was right on his tall. After the first lap they came down the sandwash with Rich still holding a small lead but he dropped it in the sandwash turn just before the hUl near the pits. Bergquist missed him by inches and went through a big bush; did a band stand and held on to take the lead. Larry held the lead all the way with Richpushing hard but couldn't catch the fastmoving Bergquist who pulled In for the ·wln. Rich was second and George Walker on a Husky was third. After George got his helmet off he said he was so tired, "1 think it would have been plenty at two laps. That course was tough." Steve Kirk on a Montesa was fourth, George Zuber was tltth and Whitey was first Amateur on a Malco. Close behind was Don Hill on a Husky picking UP second Amateur. It was a hot day, but the racing was good and everyone sat around under the tarpaultn and bench raced until the sun went down. (Results on page 26)
