Byers Big Winner At D-ehesa By Bill Harmer DEHESA INDIAN RESERVATION, Aug. 10, 1969 - Riding for Lucky Yamaha, Carl Byers of San Diego Dal'rowly defeated his team mate Ward Ring and captured first honors in the heated 250cc Expert contest here today. Earl Barker, riding for South Bay Yamaha finished a close third in a series of motos that saw all three of the Yamaha pilots in the lead more than once. Byers also won first place points In the 100cc Expert series of motos on a Hodaka for C and H Rac- . ing Team. 1968 point champion, Jim Mc Guire, pressed him throughouttheafternoon on his F & M Reed Valve Hodaka, but had to settle for second. Another veteran Hodaka jockey, Kevin Stafford, finished a close third. The Open Expert contest ended uP in a tie between Triumph mounted Myron Carter and Wayne Hosaka on Pete Astone's hotly tuned Triumph. Earl Barker on another Triumph looked Impressive as he mixed it uP with Carter and Hesaka, but had to settle for third place. Young Steve Sharp, riding the Matchless that he has been coming close of late, f1na1ly turned the trick and won the Open Novice Moto series. BSA mounted Russ Burch took sk11led advantage of a COuPle of spills by Triumph pilot Bob Larson and beat him out of second place in the Novice event. The question posed about Don Vescoe's 125cc Twin Yamaha that Jim Chitwood rode to a screaming victory at South Bay Speedway last week was answered. It can and did beat all the two stroke single to win the Expert 125cc races. Bultaco mounted Wayne Hosaka turned ba..k Sachs pilot Eric Crlppa to take second place honors. There was another tie score for first place in the Powder Puff Steeplechase between Hodaka mounted Debbie Reon and Shirley Newsom on a Suzuki. Lori Fuller made her Daddy proud by taking third place. Lori's riding has improved greatly this year and when she gains a little more conf1dence she will be a g1r1 to be reckoned with. Jim McGuire pulled a big upset by staying in ftont of the bigger displacement machines to win the Lucky Yamaha Sweepstakes on his little Hodaka 100. Lucky Yamaha's Racing Team Carl Byers and Ward Ring rode hub to hub through all kinds of traffic to take second and third in the Handicap Race that Is oPen to all first and second place finishers of all classes. Two outstanding riders of the evening didn't tare as well but showed their competitive spirit. One was Ray Vanderpool Who took third place in the 250Cc TT main event. After a tremendous fall with serious injuries two weeks ago at Elsinore, Ray came out and rode despite his aches and pa1ns. and really giving the front runners a tough time. Another young man who has been a good competitor all year but hasn'tquite been one of the front runners really caught spark. Numer 11, Larry Shaw, riding his JAP-type Bultaco, finished in second place behind Randy Ellis and in front of Mark Kruse and Jimmy Raymond. (Results on page 27) ELTORO, CALIF. Aug. 6 - All SElllSon last year's champion Randy (Bultaco) Ellis has done poorly. But last Wednesday night he had a hat full of tricks, winning the 250cc short track trophy dash and main event, the 500cc short track dash and main event, and the 500cc TT trophy dash and main event, which Is quite a feat for one eveningl Top contender in some of these same events, Jimmy Raymond, was plagued with bad luck and a sore back. Gary (Clmatti) Scott was able to beat the presimt points leader, Ron Taylor, in the 125cc Short track main event. Number twg man Mark Kruse, strong contender in the main event, fell going into the stra1ghtaway, but recovered qulCkly, finishing in eighth spot. Ron Taylor earlier in the evening proved his championship ability by winning the 125cc TT main event and Scott. took third place.
