This year the duel was tight until Rayborn ran of! the course on the 18th round, giving Yvon the margin he needed to breathe. But then the Yamaha piston let go and Ray_ born's Harley forged ahead. Suzuki mounted Ron Grant took up the challenge and pressed the Hrley and Rayborn for five laps before dropping ott the record pace. Ron's. teammate. Art Baumann, found himself in third but too tar back to be a threat. The Harley and two SUZuki's ran totbe t1n1sh with both Grant and Baumann deciding to make the required gas stop on the last lap In the tInal few yards to the finish line. Both made it with room to spare aver Roger Reiman and the rest at the forty two rider field that was still running at the t1n1sh in weather than can only be described as pertect for road racing. The 86 points put Rayborn back in contention for the point lead as he again moved to second place, behind Laww1ll who never appeared to be quick during the entire meating. Gene Romero dropped to third In the standings when he Triumph quit running on the 21st lap with Gene in tenth place. Bad luck also took Triumph rider Chuck Palmgren who was running up in the points in a strong tilth position on the 38th lap. Chuck went to the pits the next lap and never returned. The Yamaha brigade made up of Nicholas, Duhamel, Ralph White, Dick Mann, Mike Dutr, Tom Rockwood, Bob Winters, Ron Pierce, all had their problems. Dutr, Pierce and Rockwood were the only three riders still running at the t1n1sh. The rest at the two day program was all Yamana with both the 250' s and the 350's scoring a sweep in the combined 250 Expert/Amateur, Novice and Amateur big bore classes. The Yamahas won every race bullhe bl. one. This Is Geor.e Cunha of Boslon Yamaha. Mark (87) Brelsford leads Duhamel, Ro.er (55) Reiman, and Chuck (38) Palm.ren. Duhamel and rookie Ron Pierce ran away with the combined 250 event with Duhamel a split second ahead at Pierce at the t1n1sh Une. California's novice road racing champ, Doll Emde led a string at Yamaha riders across the Une in record breaking time to capture the Novice 250cc tInal. Eastern Amateur, Frank Cam1llleri and his Yamaha 350 ran away tram the field, set records on every lap, and won by a wide margin in the Amateur tInal. Yamaha 250's and 350's won every heat race and every main event - except the expert big bike national t1nal taken by Rayborn•. Indubllably. Ihls I s Floyd Clymer aslrlde one of his products. .... . The onlY mishap occurred during the Expert t1nal when ma.gaz1ne editor, Gordon Jennings and his Honda crashed with another rider. Jennings was hospltal1zed with a broken shoulder blade. The natifinal circuit now remains in the Midwest for the remainder at August and then returns to the West COllst for the stretch run in September.
