Greene ORANGE COUNTRY FAIRGROUNDS, CAL., August 1 - '!be ever-increasing crowd of spedators at this fairgounds track again fouod tIlemse1ves viewing some of tIl~ most frenzied rac1Dg foUDd in tile soutbland today. Rick Woods put on bis usual display of full bore r1d1ng and in bis ba!!dicap beat, was able to overcome bis 50- yard ba ndlcap to take tile win by a ba1r com1ng out of tile last corner of tile last lap. '!be Class B event was Tim Bamfords race all tile way as he took tile win ahead 11 Jim Doron to also win tile Champion Helmet tbat is given away each week to tile winner of tile B main. '!be match race to lIeterm1ne who will , try to dethrone Rick Woods for tile 'KIng of '!be Hill' Utle was between Bruce Haserot and Larry He1nselman. Off tile . line, through tile first corner and down tile back straigbt, tIley went as if ~y were wired togetller, tIlen·as tIley came through tile second corner, Bruce got into a 11ttle wobble and had to sbut off for an instant and dropped back about two bike 1eDgbtbsand as be tried to make. it back, he went down, leaving an easy win for He1nse1maJl. Flying Flea Fi,nds The Combination At Whiteman By Mike Capa11te PACOlMA~ CAL., August 2, 1969-Sammy Tanner showed them Saturday night that tile quickest way arouod tile Speedway track isn't necessarily tile shortest as it seems he bas f1nallY developed his b1gh groove style tor use on tile shorter courses. In tile last few weeks, Sammy bas been trying tile high groove at Pacoima, trying to ride it llke he rides tile outside of tile track at Ascot. Some Ume ago, he foUDd tile right combination and took tile main event and since then, it bas seemed to elude btm. One nigbt, be even sw1 tched and tried bolding it Ught in tile induding hard-to-get items I AGV HELMETS '!be Cballenge Match Race between Woods and He1nse1man was an example of Rick's ab1lity to. take tile lead from a scratcb start as be powered out of tile first corner ahead of Larry and try as be could, Larry couldn't seem to find tile same amount of tracUon that Woods was able to muster and Rick took tile win to retain tile Cballenge Utle and face tile winner of tile Matcb Race for next week. As tile riders lined up for tile Handicap main. it was brougbt to tile attenUon of tile crowd that Rick Woods had gone uodefeated in five previous races already that evening. He had topped bis Handicap Heat, 'bis Handicap Semi, bis Scratch Heat, bis Scratch Semi and tile Cballenge Match race. '!be tension rippled through tile grandstands, for bere in Orange County, Woods bas quite a following of loyal tans as be is a local boy and here be had a chance of doing that one tb1ng that bas yet eluded all tile riders at tb1s Costa Mesa oval. No one bas ever taken tile win all races entered and also taken borne botb tile Handicap and Scratch Main. Off tile llne, it was Kenny Brown in tile lead and Sonny Nutter went down in tile first corner and spun a brodte and was up and away aga1ll, but it put bim out of tile running. Eric Olesen was in second spot witll Stu Morley and Don Hawley followed by Woods in t1ftll. Rick pulled into tourth UDder Hawley as Olesen took tile lead awayfrom Brown. As Brown dropped back to Second, Morley and Woods botll moved past btm to take over second and third spot. As tIley started into tile last lap, Rick made bis bid tor the second spot beld by Morley but Stu wasn't about to give it up witllout a battle and as tIley bulfeted togetller in tile corner, Woods lost control and in trying to save it be hooked bis front wheel over tile 1ns1de course marker and before he could extract himself and macb1ne from tile infield and back on tile t:rack, he had dropped to tiftll place and Eric Olesen had taken tile win to take home tile Champion belmet and tile kiss from tile lovely trophy girl. Woods redeemed bimself in tile scratch main as he was really leaning on it, as tIlougb he was determined to get this one. Sonny Nutter copped tile lead off tile llne and Woods, who usually sticks pretty well to tile pole, poured on the throttle and took ~e lead away from Sonny on tile outside. Tbis shook Sonny so bad that he dropped back to tourtb letting Hawley move up to second witll Savage tbtrd. Nutter regaJiied mse1f enough to take third away from Savage, tIlen Hawley went down in tile corner. Nutter f1n1sbed second witll Savage tbtrd. Again no one was able to pull a sweep, but next week is anotber day and anotller race, so we'll see what happens. (Results on page 20) corners, but tb1s strategy wassoonabandoned. and Sammy went back to bis outside groove trying to get tile righi-combinaUon. Tanner seems to have found it as anyone who happened to witness bis performance at Wbtteman will atttest to. Atter copping bis heat and semi witll tile two fastest Urnes of tile night, Tanner l1ned uP in tile tropby dash Iiga1nst three of tile best, Rick Woods, Sonny Nutter and Paul Conserriere. '!be only one mtsstng was Steve Bast, High point rider and maybe it was to Steve's advantage tIlewaySammy was flying. Sam took tile lead rtcbt from tile flag in tile Dash and witll Nutter second and Woods tbtrd, he moved outbis lead and by the Urne that Woods got arouod Nutter, it was too late to catch Tanner and '!be "Flea" received tile rewards of a tropby dash winner. '!be C main was a lattle to tile wire for first and tbtrd place as Dennis GUdenbaus held tile lead for the entire race witll Jim Gresham (winner of a spec1a1 match race witll Jack 0' Brien) right on bis rear wheel and right beb1nd tIlem for tile entire race was Harlan Bast in tbtrd witll Larry Hetnselrnan breatbtng down bis neck. As Dennis came out of tile last corae in tile last lap, Jim made bis bid and took tile win by inches and right beb1nd,L.arry did tile same tbtng and took tbtrd place away . from Harlan at tile wire. The B main was tile sceneottllenigbts worst crash as Bruce Haserotand Lonnie CastUlo tangled UP on tile back straight. Botll riders were alrigbt and Bruce was able to remount for tile restart bnt Lonnie had twisted bis left ankle and decided not to chance running. As tile race was restarted it was sUll a battle as Bruce Haserot grabbed tile lead and beld it for two laps but tile pressure put on by Jack O'Brien was too much as Jack moved into the lead. The llne UP tor tile A MaIn was tile same as tile Trophy Dash except tile riders were handicapped. Witll Woods and Nutter on tile 30 yard line and Conserriere and Tanner on tile 20 yard line, it looked pretty bad tor Woods and Nutter. As tile !lag was dropped, botll Paul and Rick were able to get terr1tlc starts and tIley moved into tile one-two posiUoos witll Sammy in tbtrd. The Rick Woods tans in tile stands were jubilant as tbey figured Tanner wouldn't be able to pass Rick and that Rick would get Paul. '!be crowd came to its feet as tIley blew into the corner on the second lap. Tanner left tile throttle on and took tile b1gh groove and passed botll Woods and Conserriere in tile same corner on the outside and came out of tile corner in the lead and stretched it out. Conserriere, wbo was carrying tile Great Bear banner in tile A main clld a very etf1cient job of keeping Woods hack in tile tbtrd slot and as tIley crossed the 11ne, itwas Tanner wasy out in front.
