straDee "MacDetic Tree" oil the course ::: Gettlnl IIlp at Ba)' Mare. By Jerry Greer pbotos by Dennis Greene Donna Lucas 1000 OAKS, CAL., July 27, 1969- Bay Mare, the or1g1nal base camp of the Lost Legion, bas everything gol.Dg tor it except clear directions on how to get there. But once you do, you couldn't speodyour time in a better place. Motocross was the drID and two-strokes provided the cadence. And before we go any further, lets get one thI.Dg straJgbt! You guys make me sick, a1-nys jawing about twostrokes and how suPertor they are. Right? Went Let me ask you just this! What POWers the water truck? Yeah Manl And you ain't NEVER goin'to see a twostroke water truck. No torque, see. And you GOT to have a water truck. RIght? I teel better now. Attendance was just right without elbow crowds, and a steadY sea breeze blew trom the water hole, heretn alter reterred to as the "gravity cavity". Three 10 lap motos provided the entertainment for each class with some classes belng run jointly for lack of pbyslca1 TIll. ~11h, spe.~. steep U turn took III toll In ings in a sl.Dgle bound. He later volced a preference for taIl hllls. Who he? Mike Runyard thats wbo! Took a Sachs and turned the day's fastest lap! Won all three motos on that 125. The word Senior must mean somethl.Dg. Jell Creager on a Yamaha was just plain doing some tremendous European wow-em rlding tor second place each time. Long wbeel1es across rough stutr, using English in both directions on the same wbeel1e II Jeff's done his tan club homework, and it's what draws the non-avid fans. Keep ituP Jeff. SQPer Mike did a couPle 01 'em too just to keep the troops awake! People dig It. The 100 sportsman may not have been the toughest but it sure as heck was the most closely fought. The 250 Sportsman opened the way to some heads- uP racing for the rest of the day. Mike Bast won the tirst round on a Yamaha but not without Chuck Esterline on his mlghty Bul looking for the hole all the way around. BID Harris hung his hopes on a Ma!co and f1n1shed in the money. In fact, Mr. Hartis took home enough in each moto to garner 1st overall. The lh1rd 250 Sp. moto recelved the Beautiful People AwaJ;d. Dan Schatfer piled off a ravine in slow motion and dlsappeared. No Dan was to be seen. SUence. A moment later one glove, looking l1ke a Nlke Missile, shot stra1ght uP, then another. Hi Dan. The water truck then "cleaned" a section and disappared In Its own rainbow around the corner. Their water truck's neater than a Honda generator. The 125 Sportsman was cut loose and surprlse! You've just been water trucked. Good old mud! Bryar Holcomb was just llat rattling doors on his Penton though, and J1m Dawson stayed right beh1nd h1m on his Yamaha for every lap but the one that counted. R1.Ightttl Na1led Holcomb at the f1II1sh I1ne. The only lap they count, too. Wouldn't you just know! So old Holcomb did what he knew best in the next moto and strapped it to Dawson, but just hBrely. Bets were goI.Dg at the old gravity cavity that Holcomb would be the first to bathe in its gentle waters. Riding kind 01 bard, he was. Dawson and Yamaha performed a trick in the th1rd moto, though. He called it turnI.Dg laps 5 seconds faster than before. Holcomb ran second, aDd it's only right. D comes before H in the alphabet. Two bard chargers.
