A V.m.h. rid... whoolles put • h~less corn· petltor who tries to con his mount bKk to life. By Ericb Kobler HUNTINGTON BEACH, CAL. July 27Tb1s race day could pretty well be described by telling about one rider, Gary Wells. Wells, a 12 year'old junior 111gb student trom Las Vegas, put on a performance tbat is rare In itself. When you consider b1s age and size, the job tbls boy does Is hard to believe. (I bope b1s fatller doesn't let bim read tbls.) He'S very smootb, and apparently bas tile eodurance of tile other Gary Ba11eyl He ran two macblnes, botll Brtdgestones, In four classes. On bis 100 single he rlIn tile 100 class and got a flrst and a second. II1dIng a 175 twin In tbe 200 class, be earned three flrsts, moved uP to tbe 250 class on tile same bike, got a tblrd, and, after a restart, a seventll. HIs short legs make good starts d1ff1cult. Tb1s reporter rode both Gary's bikes and I must admJt tIIey really have the beans, but they are being ridden by a superb little jockey. I sincerely bope tbat Brldgestone dec1des to give a llWe belP to tbls boy (llP to now there bas been NONE). before be decides to accept the ofler to ride for a dlfferent Japanese 11oe. It was nice to see Bridgestone uP tront. Now If Honda would just wake llP and produce a ltght, tull lOOee, witll tlve gears, it would really be Interesting. '!bere was only one running; tile same one tbat ran Firecracker G.p. here. Altllougb It seemed to be well ridden it was obviously not pu1llng 11ke tile two strokes. Last and next to last Is DO place for Honda! Mike Toussau won $25 and the three foot trophy for the Huntington Beach Cycle Park High Points contest. 'IbIs is really a good track, and there Is a flrst class program for the riders and spectators. A parade lap, playing of the National Anthem, tntroductlon of the riders, and an Intolerance of shady cbaracters and/or their tactics. The 650 Novice class was won by a rider who Is reputed to be runn1ng Pro. T.T. at Ascot. 'IbIs same rider, and otbers 11ke b1m, sbow uP with a district 37 card proc1a1mlng b1m to be a Novice! Is tbls compatable with the spirit of having three class1f1cations of riders, sllPposedly groQlled according to experience and sk1ll? Hope to bear from someone about tbls.
