Moto-x Ac.cessories & EqUipment Rick Woods Takes Oyer Point Lead As Mil er And Olsen Cop Mains COSTA MESA, CAL., July 4, 1969 - It you haven't caught the action at the new speedway track at the Orange County FairgroWlds, you will have to wait three weeks now as the track will have to be removed tbls week for the annual Orange COWlty Fair. Promoter Harry Oxley stated that "we couldn't get a fair date. tbls year because they book a year in advance, but they have aiready requested us to rWl the motorcycle races through the fair next year and it is all set... The track surface will have to be completely removed for tbe fair and tben put back apia which will actually be the same as making it again. So you SPeedway fans, mark Jul 25 on your calendar because that is the date tbe fuel-burniDg missiles will return to Costa Mesa. . Although some of the regular riders were attending the exhibitioo races at the Los Angeles Coliseum, it in no way detracted from the quality or the excitement of the races as U.S. champ Rick Woods put on his usual crowdpleasing display of stand-up style riding and overcame his 50-yard handicap in both his heat and his semi to cop the wins much to the delight of tbe fans. The first match race was between Bill Cody and Terry Graham which was a pretty even match with Cody getting a slight edge and as they came Into the last corner, Terry made a last-ditch effort to get Cody on the inside and went in too hard and lost it. Cody held his and it looked like an easy win when suddenly as he accelerated for the tinish line, he drifted wide and slammed apiast the fence. From there on it was like he bad a tiger by the tall as the machine was leaping back and forth across the track . out of control with Bill somehow managing to remain on top of it maklng a futile effort to regain control. After thrashing Bill soundly for about forty yards, the machine finallY won and pitched him off, but Bill was still CI:edited with the win as both be and machine slid across tbe f1nish line. The second match race looked like the AMA re- incarnated as it brought to the line Don Hawley and Stu Morley. What made it a little more interesting is the fact that tbey bad just had a photo-f1n1sh in their scratch heat with Stu being top dog so it was a matter of determination for Hawley as they went at it with all the excitement of a oatiooal. Morley copped the lead 10 the first lap but he wasn't able to hold it as Don came bal:k charging and took the win by tbe same two inches that Stu had beaten him in the scratch heal. The handicap main had all of Rick Woods tans on the edge of their seats as he sat on the tifty- yard handicap line. There is something about a rider that can come trom behind to take a win that endears him to the hearts of the spectators and Rick had accomplished this feat twice aiready and everyooe was cheering tor him. As the flag was dropped, Eric Olson and Bill Todd jumped into tbe lead while Woods couldn't seem to lind a way througb the pack and one lap was already down wben he made his bid. Ron Miller lett a hole for him and Woods started his charge and slowly one by one he worked his way up to the second spot as the crowd virtually came unglued. As Rick tried to get UDder Eric Olson to take over-the lead, Eric closed tbe gate 00 him and Rick almost lost it but was able to keep tbe machine upright, The little bit f1 time he lost was enough to keep him trom a chance to pass Eric as Woods had to settle for a secood spot but the hand he received from the crowd as he pulled off the track, you would have thought he won. It was eJlPElCted that Woods would take the scratch main as he gets off the line like he Is shot out of a cannon but stu Morley bad other Ideas as he jumPed into the lead with Miller and Todd right behind him with Woods in fourth. Woods made his bid in the second lap and passed Todd and then went for Miller and for the second time in the evening toWld that the hole he was going through suddenly was closed, but this time he couldn't back oft enough to keep from bumping Ron rather hard and while Ron was able to retain 'cootrol of his machine, it put Woods in all kinds of trouble as he tought the machine clean to the wall before he could get control and as he was doing this, Bill Todd moved into tbird. It seemed to be all over for Rick as he had too much groWld to cover and not enough time when Stu Morley who was way out in front and holding first place clean as a whistle dropped it 10 the corner and although everyone missed him it again cost Woods some valuable distance and he couldli't make It up and had to settle for a third place behind Ron Miller and Bill Todd. By virtue of the points that Rick accumulated, he has taken over the point lead at this Costa Mesa track while only one point puts Sonny Nutter ahead of Steve Bast for the second place, so if you want to see some wild Class A speedway racing s these boys dice for the polnt lead, come on out July 2S. A Gift To The Old Man From His Kid line everytime I go to the track, and st11l come out on top; or else he can pull out tbls piece of paper and say: my kid looks up to me, and he may not be much - hut he's mine. And before I started riding front of the pack he always bad another Idea to make my bike go a little taster, or how to maJce a faster lap, or a better start. I never heard him say that I wasn't rid1ng hard enough, but he knew 1 wasn't. And 1 saw him give three years of his lite to my brother when he got hurt. And then give every cent he could pay to make him well again, and all the time he gave and couldn't really attord. But if he complained about it, 1 never knew. I always knew I could find myoid man when I needed him, and I have, a few times at least. He was always ready to drop what he was doing and help me out, even if I didn't ask. Most of the time he just stood in the pits and watched his kid ride, but it must have been enough.
