M Speedway again bad the spectators on
their feet. The beats gave the crowd wild
and last main events. As the 500 Novice
riders tunneled on to the seven foot jump.
they ended up in a pyramid seven bikes.
one broken ankle (Del Robertson) and a
restart.
100 Novice Jerry Willis took his heat
with his usual t1nesse. but stepped up the
pace in the Main Event,being paced by
the hard riding Nevada City boy. Jack
Eddings on an increasingly fast Hodaka.
Third and fourth places went to Neil
MdConal, who was being kept honest by
Charles Giese Jr.
A super fast 125 Novice event again
drew anxious and hungry riders to do
battle with Vic Krill who has to date
maintained. his supremacy in this event.
Out
the north came Orovilles John
Sasman throttle twisting for a hard
earned second place, and was In turn
pushed by Les Kern.
200 Novice rider Jim Adams of Beneda
broke away from the pack early and
stayed there. Riding a hard second Ed
(Great Pumpkin) Brown pushed close
behind Adams, Wltil losing his mount
on the seventh laP. Grabbing second was
Steve Foster from San Leandro.
The 250 Novice machines got off the
line fast and immediately started to mix
It up in the !lrst turn. Pulling eagerly
for the seven foot jump were Mi.ke Williams, Charles Fairchild. and Reg Kittrelle. Positions were maintained through the third lap. until Fairchild wheeled
in close to Williams. closing the gap
and overtook him in a flying boWld over
the jump. Order was maintained through
the checkered. Fairchild went on to the
Speciai 15 lap event showing that same
spark to again capture 1st overall.
A scorching 250 Am. bWlCh packed the
ftrst turn as all eyes turned to the jump
apron. Gary Kunsman grabbed an early
lead, followed closely by John File. Fites
anxiousness got the best
him on lap
six, when loss of traction dumped him.
Seizing his opportunity, John Arbacherle
powered his But to second position. in
hot pursuit, Jim Denny and Bill Hines,
both throotle benders, swept the track
in their own race for that third spot.
Denny's previous sour experience spurred him on to a very well earned third
place.
Hack riding popularity has increased
to the point where class divisions are
being prepared for future races. Eight
hacks lined up for the start. Out for the
lead Gene and wite Gloria Bass of Reno,
now old hands at this sport, rode their
fast Suzuld for the first spot. Ted
Kenyon and new member Ted Bahnson.
sporting a new Yamaha hack diced It up
royally with Lonnie Foreman and Lucky
KIrby. ooly to take a back seat to the more
experienced Foreman-KIrbY team.
Gary Winter from Ripon took first 500
Novice. After the second lap Ronald Taibot of Pacltlca on his Honda fell Into
second and Robert Thomas from Gridley
placed third •

Jose on his Matco came in first from
start to tinish. Second place was fought
between Bob Jensen 00 his Triumph and
Bob Henwood
San Carlos (Honda).
Jensen took a bad spill on his last lap,
opening second place to Henwood.
There was one trophy for the 650
Novice ride. so all riders were Go:
Four riders came off the line together
with Mike Sandrla
San Francisco and
John· Bardon Forest Hills neck and neck
out or the first turn. Glen Pair or Marysville on his molten Triumph held a
steady third. On the fourth lap Mike Sandria and bike took a bad spill bringing a
now hot race between John Barden and
Glen Pair. Barden on his last sweep
slid wide 00 turn two. just enough for the
ever aiert Pair to take hold and come in
a hair ahead

650 Amateur-Expert Elmer(Preacher)
Gantry or San Bruno. riding a Triumph,
was really on that pipe from the start. All
eyes were 00 this colorful rider. in hiE"

Rafael on his BSA gave the Preacher
something to fly about. He was 011 all the

took a spectacular spill and Russ Powell
took over first place. A new tight was
brewing between Bob Masters or Burlingame and Dennis Dickerson Marysville. Masters moved ahead for the
second brass.
