(213) 542-<1041 Scramblin' Around By Maureen Lee Because of some of the letters to the ed1tor in last weeks' paper, we thought we'd do a Uttle explaining this week on just what tlle District 37 Sports Committee and the Competition Committee Is. Every week you ride under the District and tile national A~ rules whether you belong to a club or not and we'd lilce to clear the air a little about what the DIstrict does and does not do. The Sports Committee is composed of the competition clubs In District 37. Each club has two votes. These representatives elect the District Officers and the Competition Committee. Each nominee must be nominated and seconded and a full ballot is prepared. The Competition Committee consists of seven men plus two "extras" who are not currently stewards but who serve where needed, and the duties of these men are not easy. Each keeps one set of points in one of the various divisions of riding activity, posting these on each riders card as the results come in. Besides that he has to know the rule book Inside oui and uPside-down and backwards when going to races to assist the host club referee when problems arise or the club is really doing things wrong. Many times they give uP riding temselves to help out when a club is floundering along. Every single one of 'em Is a current compeUtior.rider, and it's tough to lose out on a Sundays' riding but most do It gladly because they are worldng for the sport. Rumors have been over the years that these officials are paid. I can testifY to the fact that no, we're not! Each year we get a jacket and our phone bills are paid and when I say phone b1l1s, 1 don't mean the monthly rate etc. but only those we incurron District business. If one of us drives a COuPle of hundred mUes on District business, whatever It is, we foot the bill. When rules need to be changed they are brought up to the body at the Sports Committee. The Competition Committee hashes them over but It is the body who makes the decisions as to what is done, usually following what the Compo Comm recommends because they know that all the pros and cons have been thoroughly thrashed out before the recommendation is given, but they can and have voted no. EI Camino Real San Clemente, Callfomla Cll4) 492-&141 By Bill Harmer Brad Andres, former Grand National Champion and three- time Daytona winner has been retired from racing for nine years, and at 33 is managing the Andres' San Diego Harley Davidson motorcycle agency. When we called on Brad at the downtown agency, he was busy delivering eleven new machines to the San Diego Pollee Department but he put aside his "Report of Sale" book to talk with us. We asked why a youth who was obviously tops in the racing game at 24 would give uP a bright racing future. HiS simple explanation showed the good judgment that made him a top notch competitor In the first place. His father, who had run the motorcycle business for many years, -gave Brad a choice. He wanted to retilre and told Brad to either give up racing and manage the agency ClmA1T1 To get to the current squabble goiI!g on about peualties to clubs and riders, here are the facts. A Competition. Committee meeting is something to see. There is no unnecessary discussion on anything but competition. Letters are read, protests, changes of date, etc. and the grouP gets down to business. Now we'll state right here that if you are not a club member you get the same treatment that a club member gets should your name be brought uP before the committee. Your District riding card assures you of this. These people are all competitionriders are are well aware of the problems everyone faces when racing plus all the "sneakys" all racers at one time or another try. If the Committee has a protest against you as a rider or your club as a group, you are invited to attend and speak up, and many do, helping to clarify the situation. However, many don't and the Committee has no other choice but to Ialk It over thoroughly, make its decision and that decision sticks. That's what the Committee was voted in to do In the first place, uPhold the rules of compe tition)Nhen they are faced with a club who is way over wi th . sending out results to stewards and riders (one last year was 73 days late!) What are they to do? Praise them for throwing a race? they have to invoke the penalty, the penalty that that very club voted in themselves! When a rider gets flat caught at doing something wrong, once again they have to invoke the penalty regardless of the fact that maybe at sometime one of them did the same thing and got away with It. There have been many times when a club is overdue on results and knows it and calls either a steward or an officer explaining why. I have yet to see the day when a club does this and (with a legit amite excuse) be penalized. Most of us there have worked on getting results out and know the problems! The District 37 Sports Committee system is not foolproof. Everyone is an amateur worker and a racer but they try. It's also a fact that the guys who yell the loudest are the ones who won't run for any office at all (let alone join a club) and for the clubs themselves, some of the chronic snivelers are clubs who haven't had one rep. on the floor for as much as four months and remember, they have four on the record. How do 1 know? I keep the records! or it would be sold. Brad, who had just married his wile, Betty, chose to take over the agency which he has managed ever since. He keeps abreast of the latest racing results through the columns of CYCLE NEWS which he sells from the parts counter but he usually manages to get away from business to make it to Daytona for the Speed-Week wind-up. A devoted family man, Brad delights in his lovely seven year old daughter, Laurie, and has a large color photo of her on the wall beside his desk. Brad's hobby Is skin-diving and on his days off you'll find him at some favorite Pacific Coast spot armed with a spear gun stalking denizens of the deep. With very little coaxing he'll proudly show you a color snapshot of the 764 pound black sea bass and tell you bow he landed it. He was free diving (no breathing tank) at Rancho Buena Vista In Baja California, Mexico when he speared the giant fish. For over an hour the monster towed Brad through the sea as he held desperately to the line. As he completed the story, the dreamy look left his eyes and he became the young business man again as he said, "Well, I'd better get these registration sheets made out." So with a handclasp we bid farewell to Brad Andres, world famous motorcycle racer. business executive and spear fisherman. Wlti'e.an Speed.a, By Mike CapaUte PACOIMA, CAL. July 12,1969- Larry Heinselman found the track to his liking Saturday night as he was able to take the main event win aver U.S. champion Rick Woods after being beaten by Woods in the Trophy Dash. Larry was able to accelerate from the starting line and be first into the corner. ThIs almost cost Rick the trophy dash as he was hard pressed to come from a fourth place start to move up for the win. Larry was riding for the win in the dash, but Rick was charging out of the corners and with one lap to go he was able to slip In under Larry to win the Trophy, the kiss from the trophy girl and a case of Bardhal. The C main had the crowd on the edge of their seats as Sammy Tanner gave them a sample of his riding the high groove. With Jim Gresham and Jim Ashworth busy fighting for the lead and Cec Platt right behind them, it looked bad for fourth place Tanner as he couldn't find an opening for the first lap. Suddenly it was the old story for Sam as he took to the outside and really leaned on his Jawa as he moved around Platt. By this time, Gresham had taken the lead over Ashworth and Tanner quickly dispatched Ashworth too. Gresham was another matter as Jim was getting in one of his better rides of the season and he knew that Sam was right behind him. If Sam was going to take him, it would be on the outside so Gresham started drifting farther and farther out in the corners. It looked like his strategy going to work and Tanner was going to have to settle for second when in the last corner Tanner went In so hard and wide that his rear wheel was right on the very edge of the track. He was making one last gamble for the win and it paid of! as Gresham was unable to block him or to match his acceleration out of the corner and Sam took the checkered flag by mere inches. Returning after a long absence from Speedway racing was Mike Bast, brother of point leader Steve Bast who was absent from the night's program. M1ke was looldng good and jumped into the lead of the B Main at the start, but out of nowhere !ike had had been shot out of a cannon came Paul Conserrlere. Paul's sudden dash took him Into the lead and gave him a good distance between himself and second place Bast. Nutter pushed all the way and on the final drive for the checkered flag, Sunny was able to take second place only about ten yards before the finish. The A main consisted of Bruce Haserot who had beaten Sonny Nutter In the Semi; Larry Heinselman who had just about taken the Trophy Dash away from Woods; Jack O'Brien who had beaten Woods last week in the trophy dash but had been beaten in the main by both Woods and Heinselman. was Larry Helnselman Is beeomine known for his excellent starts off the line. Heinselman was able to get one of his fabulous starts and garnered the lead with O'Brien second and Woods third. Rick was able to slip under 0' Brien and move into second. He moved uP to Heinselman, but Larry was giving It all he had and although Rick was pulling beside him on the straights, he couldn't move ahead of him. Haserot, who had gotten a bad start went down in the corner and was out. Larry and Rick pulled away from 0' Brien so it was definitely a two-man race with crowd going crazy as they were sliding side by side through the corner s and shooting down the straights. Larry was just inches ahead and it was obvious that this one would be decided at the finish line.As they entered the last corner, it looked Uke Rick might be able to take it when he bobbled a bit but he came on with a tremendous burst of speed and at the wire only inches separated them as Helnselman took the win. Both riders were given a big hand by the crowd as they pulled into the pits. (Results on page 20)
