Anony.ity Reigns At Bay Mare Two-hundred thlrty-sll riders converled on the Bay Mare track for a loca' record attendance. By Dave Smead BAY MARE RANCH, CAL., July'6, 1969 - The greeting Sunday morning at Bay Mare was, "You'd better give us a good write IlP this time or we're going to be p.o.'d" Now that's not exactly conducive to good relations or a "good story" but it's hard to do a bad one when they run three motos. The riders that come to ride, rode. It made for a long day on a rough course. Care had been taken to make the course wide in most places. The only complaint heard about the course was the amount of dust. Water was desperately needed more often. Bay Mare offers Ideal terrain for motocross with Its hills, sand and trees for shade. But It has to have water. Now there Is one big Item missing from this report and that is how the races went. Curiously, the Bay Mare Association didn't tally results nor did they supply a list of names to go with the numbers taken by this reporter. That means that all the riders who put on excellent shows of sldll don't get due credit. A list of results hardly suffices for the effort put forth by most entrants. Two hundred thirty-six riders signed IlP and most were going to ride as exPerts because AMA desert novice numbers weren't good enough for motocross novice Identification. Fortunately this was changed before the race started so that riders were entered in an appropriate class. That's that way It was at Bay Mare on July 6, 1969. The View From Charlie's Head Being an analyst programmer, I have been giving quite a bit of thought lalely as to why motorcycles have been becoming so popular. I have noticed the new designs, the gay colors, the chrome and other goodies. Racing and riding is for the pure enjoyment, but it bothered me because I knew there was something else that motivatell men to buy these beautiful machines. As you all know, the weather has been lousy these last few week..,nds, causing most races to be cancelled in this area. We.., last.l)unday it finally cleared off around four o'clock, so I get the bike out and figure I might as well go for a little ride anyways, when my wife yells out the window "Hey, Thelma wants to go for a ride." (Any names used are fictitious to protect thC innocent). WOW! Here comes Thelma in these tight white pants! Abhhhh-we better ride on the road for your sake-or maybe mine. Oh dear-Vroooom-huny-Vroooom-baclc-Vroooom. What did she say? I can't hear with this helmet on. Put your arms around me and hold on tight, we'll be getting up around 3S to 40. Ab, don't squeeeeze me so tight with your legs, 1-1 gotla sh-sh-sh-shift tbis thing. Zap! Right there it hits me-Not my wife, that comes later-but the reason why Ii1l you guys buy these bikes. Put your arm around your neighbor's wife at a party and you'll end up laid out in his front yard. Or you guys with those sports cars, get caught with your girl sitting behind you in that bucket seat and that policeman will hit you right up along-side the head-if her father doesn't get to you first. But pull up in front of her house on that cycle and he says "Hold on tight, and watch out for cars." I could have sat down and cried. Ten years I've been driving cars with bucket seats. Note To Editor: Please omit this analysis of motorcycles from my copy. If my wife ever finds out my ulterior motive for having a cycle I know I'll come home some night and [md my keys to my Honda gone, my new knobby slashed and heaven knows what else. i Note To Dealers: Let it be known as of reading this article, when I come by your store and see some guy trading in his sports car on a cycle-we'll both know why. So smile when I introduce myself and ask for my commission; for I'm still a long way (imancialIy) from owning a new Penton for some serious riding. Jfo SCRAMBLES Tijuana TT - 6/29 l00cc Class 1st J.
