July 6 Festivities started with a parade lap then a line UP of all riders, introducti~ of the race Queen, and presentation of trophies for a previous run. The quaillying heats started next, wiib the 10OCc's first. The second of these was interesting in that a rider on a 50cc Honda was allowed to start about 100 feet ahead and that boy really gat it a go. However, the 100' s are just too fast and he was caught going into ibe second lap. He didn't give UP though, and finlshed seventh, making the faces of more than one rider scarlet from embarrassment. There wasn't a dull race all day and the first two from each heat were to transfer to the main 25 laps race. The ibird and fourth place finishers were destined for the consolation race, which was to be 8 laps just llke the heat races. In the last heat, open class, Lana Paige finished eighth on her big Triumph, which was great but didn't qualify her for eiiber main race. Someone didn't get the message because in the middle of all the bikes in the consolation race were all those POLKA DOTS' You guessed it. Lana Paige!. Oh well. Anyway, this one was a handicap start and was won by Mark Kruse, Hodaka, with Ted Longwith 250 Ossa, barely squeaking in for second: The twenty-five lapper was a handicapper also and the bikes were positioned all over the course according to class for the start. This race was won overall' by Bill Uhl on a 250 Bultaco, and the second place man was Ted Longwithl The one who just barely made the main event at all! Although Uhl gained the lead quite early and held It throughout ibe race, the rest of the riders all drove very aggressively and put a good performance on this track wiib its very fast and deceptive, slightly downh1ll first turn, and ibe almost buttonhook turn right Desert Turt'es M. C. Haare Scram"'es ~ c.. • r Or r aD e d ! Pf J·r e k e r aft~ the jump. Riders here rave about the traction. Fourth overall and first heavyweight was Mike Chamberlain, on a 500 Triumph, who will apparently also win the twenty-five dollars for high points here at the park. Eighth and tenth overall were 100cc brikes ridden by Doug Mac inti:e, Suzuk., and Ron Powell, KawaSlI;ki. After the race Powell seemed to think he finished much higher on the list than that but regardless, boib these boys had to really ride to do as well as they did. Thard hard luck trophy (there really was one), went to Nora Ray of Gardena who crashed while practicing here with her little Kawasaki injuring her ankle and so couldn't race. (Results on page 20) RICK WOODS COPS MEXICAN INAUGURAL By Mike Capallte Photos & story by Dick Wright in VISTA, CALIF. July 4,1969. The first annual Desert Turltes M.C. race was won in grand style by the desert pro Larry Bergquist #888 on a 360 Bultaco. It was a 9: 00 a.m. start, the course was thirty miles around and everyone would go two loops. It was real dusty, wiib a couple of rocky up hills one down hill, and a lot of white power~dust, how some of the guys can go fast through that grey blanket, when you can only see five feet in front of you is something else. Bergquist grabbed an early lead and led it all the way around, came through ibe pits for a fast gas check and out again still in the lead. ' The second loop was not quite as dusty because the riders had spread out, and it was ibe first time some of them got a look at the course. Bergquist kept the pressure on and came in for the Win with a minute lead over second man Mike Patrick #48x on a 250 Yamaha. Tom Poteet #34x on a Bultaco came down the . trail to the finish line in third place and ran out of gas a hundred yards short, his dad put some gas in and he just beat out James Martino #11 by five feet, Martino settled for fourth spot on a Husky. Larry Burns #94 was fifth and took first 500 Amateur. Tom Maxwell #23 was the first open class finisher on a Norton, followed by a real charger Danny Kiidrowski #541 on a Husky taking first 500 novice. Larry Muluck #567x was first 250 Amateur in, Bill McCoun #267x was first novice in on a Husky. The 100cc class went off twelve minutes after the big bikes. Jeff Wright #15 on his SS Hodaka grahbed the lead followed closely by Jack Morgan #1 also on a Hodaka. They dueled it out on the first loop wiib Wright coming through the pits with a ibirty foot lead over Morgan but he dropped his expansion chamber two miles out and dropped out of the race. Morgan now had the lead all to himself and pulled in for the win running twelfth overall with a minute lead over Terry Clark #6 on a Hodaka, Lynn Fortner #245m pulled in third on a Sachs. Mark Rader #28 was fourth. G. Davis #232 had a real good ride and pulled in sevneth and took first novice on a Hodaka. Mike Casper #307m took second novice. The Desert Turtles put on a good run, you would never have know that the club was only eight months old, good luck on your events in the future. (Results on page 20) TIJUANA, MEXICO, July 6, 1969 - A near-capaclty crowd turned out Sunday for the first motorcycle speedway race held in Tijuana Mexico, but the races were still a losing proposition as far as the promoters were concerned. It seems that ibe Mexican people were familiar with the fact that the track was surrounded by a wire mesh fence and overlooked on one side by high bluff. While ibe crowd in the grandstands was very disaPpointing, the estimates on ibe amount of people looking through the fence and swarming over the hills and bluffs behind ibe track ranged from four to six ibousand. While this would cause most promoters to give up, they stated that from ibe reaction of ibe crowd on the hill to the races, ibey had decided to go ahead and build a speedway arenaand r" all those people would have come inside. ., THE A Main battle looked like a retake ~ ~ ~~:~:r~~~~~:~ Steve had done some calculating and had been figuring how to get Woods because he would move up on him in the corners as Rick was staying on the high side, but the reason for ibis was a bad bump on ibe pole. Steve tried each time to make this his opportunity, but every time he would hit the ·hole and it would slow him down . enough for Wodds to get the charge out of the corner and through Bast would only be a matter of few feet behind Rick on the straighta~, that is all it takes as Rick took home the main envent win. A good time was had by all and some of the best speedway racing to date was seen on this one, but those thousands of spectators on the hillside are what is giving us the confidence to go ahead in building the new stadium. For the whole day, not one of them left, only more came to join them so this fact as well as the cheering from the hillside for every race means they liked the races and even if they don't attend the next one, they will provide one of the best parts of our advertising campaign."
