Act1al started right from the first Novice qua1Uy1ng heat when higb point IIIlUl, Fresno 's Too Sloan (Bulta.co) won over DoD Emde with a time of 2,2'7:'76 t8rely m1sslng Keith Mashbu rn's 196'7 record of 2,2'7:~11. From then on out as !be beats progres sed it was obvious that with the track and the conditio n of !be riders It was going to be a good n1gI:1t. The first two Amateu r heats were won by Keith Mashbu rn (Triump h) and David Aldana (BSA) current ly two of the hottest racers in the whole country . The Experts started off a bit dodgy with a crash in turn one requirin g a black flag, but when the race was over It was S1dp Van Leeuwen with a new record of 3:05.54 knocIdn g a tenth of a second off Eddie Mulder 's 1967 record. Having his old record broken only put Eddie on and the very next race he went out and took it back with a 3:05.051 Secood round of the qua.U.ty1ng heats came up and Novice John Hately on a Montes a flat new to set another new one in 2:25.31 . But that time quickly fell to Too Sloan, chased by Fred Edward s (Yamah a) when he set a 2:23.96 4n !be next heat. It was to be HaIel7' s II1ght when he won the Novice Trophy Dash and again set a new track record of knocking a good three-q uarters of a second off-the old one, beating out Too Sloan, Fred Edwards and AI Kenyon. The Expert trophy dash COIlStsted of S1dp Van Leeuwen, Dallas Baker, Larry WUburn and Keith Mashbu rn who was t1rstalt ernate. Mulder had set the fastest heat time and had the pole but declined to ride. Dallas Baker (BSA) took the lead to a cheerin g section the like of which Is rarely heard at Ascot. He has many tans who have been sick at seeing him put out of top spots by various problem s time and again, but this night, Dallas was going and go he did but come the trophy presentatio n It was buddy Dave Aldana seated behind Dallas on the line who accepted the trophy girl's kiss whUe Dallas accepted the trophy. HanWirth (BSA) who had done so well in the sen had Bob Haynes on his tail and then prelimi naries passed him only to go out mechan ical troubles but hack in the pack soon after with a broken chain. Dusty Aldana had been moving and as Hansen r, hadn't been asleep Coppage, howeve dropped back and Haynes (Triump h) took behind and was moving on uP passing the lead Aldana was in full charge after White and eventua lly ending second. Dallas Balcer and RalPh Whi te sorted It out for third and fourth but once Dallas got by White he moved right uP onto Coppage's rear wheel making a real try for the second place but didn't make it. Novice John Hately, with two records for the night under his belt, grabbed the front in his main but with a nice lead the motor went had and Too Sloan took over and shot ahead of the rest of the troops who were behind in full cry. Next week Is a two-day show at Ascot with a full program of flat track racing Friday n1gI:1t and the 50 lap ChampiOllShip Saturda y night. Come early for the best seats!
