Sandy Maher, official hostess for tile Ascot Park molDrcycle races, gets tile word on Friday nlghf s action from Sammy Tanner, the all·t/me winningest rider at the Gardena course. One of the busiest weekends of the 1969 motorcycle racing season is taking shape for the July 4-5 sessions at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. Flat-track competition is set for Friday evening, with the steeplechasers taking over the l83rd and Vermont Avenue layout on Saturday night. The latter race will serve as a final prep for the annual 50-lap National Steeplechase Championship at Ascot on Saturday night, July 12. Managing Director J.C. Agajanlan expects some of the touring national riders to be on hand for both cards. For one thing, it will give th a chance to race the f1veeighths-mile course once before the $7500 Nationals. And it will also give the invaders a chance to refresh themselves on the best way to get around the Ascot dirt for the October flat-track tjatlonals. There will be an added feature of the July 4 holiday program. The Huntington Park Elks motorcycle Drill Team has been scheduled to perform their precision stunts at intermission. A feature of this act is the firewall crash that'takes the motorcycle rider through a flaming wall. The Elks do stunt and pyramid routines that rate high on the specialty routines. Meanwhile, the talk of Ibe Ascot track is the 750Cc Norton sponsored by Crawford Chevrolet. Two first-year experts - Jimmy Odom and Dave Smith - have dominated action at Ascot with the Norton, which w.l.S a total stranger to the winner's circle at Ascot for years prior to only a few weeks ago.
