Scramblin' Around Miller Returning To Saddleback By Maureen Lee We hope that everyone gets a chance to see the movie shown at the Viewfinders trophy presentation. Shot by their own people, it's a blast! It showed just about every class at the Grand Prix. There's no narration (it doesn't need any) and is like "An Endless Sum mer" only it's racing, not surfing. In between the start of each class are shots of the hacks doing strange things in slow motion to the accompaniment of hill-country music. These had the audience curled UP with laughter! Anyway, we wantto see it again, that's for sure. Don't be a slow poke about getting your entry in for the Simi Valley M,C.'sGrand Prix July 19-20. From what we have been told, it will be a good one. Circuit may be three miles around and it will not be on the site used recently but on the other side of the mountain so it will be new for everyone, and therefore a challenge. We mentioned in this colul'l'Vllast week that we'd like to see a clarlftcation on the definition of "rough" and "TT" scram bles next year when clubs apply for their sanctions and a place on the calendar. Seems we're not the only ones who think this way, jUdging from the flow of letters across the editors' desk. They started coming in after Perris Valley )1)\1\\ HOl)\1\ \ -- ..: ::: --- ..: --- ..: By Gary Barton Sam my Miller, perhaps the greatest Trials rider ever to don a 'flat hat', is returning to Southern California. Miller, who made a very successful tour of the States last year, will stage a Trials school for Master and Expert riders only, at Saddleback Park, July 26th. Sunday the 27th the Southern California Trials Association will hold an invitational Trials, with the top riders of the S.C.T.A., Pacific International Trials Society and San Diego Trials Riders competing. Sam my wlll also ride hut strlcUy as an exhibition of his and his machine'S, a Bultaco Sherpa 'T', abilities. A native of Ireland, with a unequivocal 'brogue', Sammy now resides in Bartonon-Sea, Ha.mpshlre, Great Britain, just a few miles away from his Hlghcliffe shop. Here Miller operates a mall order parts service and specializes in custom components for the Sherpa 'T' , for which he was chiefly responsible for the design. Sammy has competed in nearly every type of motorcycle sport and done remarkably well In all. He was third in 125 and 250 world road racing championships In 1957, and competed in scrambles till 1961. Because he had been a member of the Ariel works trials team since 1956, Sammy decided that he would be wise to focus his attention to the growing sport. Since he made this decision Sammy has won nearly every major Trials In Europe more than once. Credits such as; five time victor In the Scottish Six Days Trials, nine times British expert, 1968 European Trials champion, and no less than six gold medals from the ISDT, all belong to the popular Irish countryman. Responsible for Miller'S return triP, are Bultaco American and Cycle World Magazine. The Southern California Trials Association will aid Miller In working the school and the actual Trials the following day. Sunday evening the S.C.T.A. will hold a Trophy Presentation and Dinner with Sammy as guest of honor. Location will be at Saddleback Inn, 1660 E. First, Santa Ana, Calif. Cost will be $6.00 a plate and those interested should contact Jack Ward, S.C.T.A. Competition Secretary, 24152 El Tiradore, Mission Viejo, Ca. 92675. Jack's phone no. is (714) 830-0686. ~~ NICK NICHOLSON MOTORS 11573 Van Owen, ~o. '" ~ changed from a "TT" to a t(rough" scrambles. Following the exact wording in the rule book, the course could be called a "TT" scrambles and some riders, when complaining about it were told that. But, when a rider gets his machine broken, such as cracked crank-cases weJll say no, that is nota (ITT", regardless of what that rule book says about improving or grading the course. The posters Perris Valley sent out said rough scrambles but some of the riders just didn't see them, and didn't get the word. Remember !he draft of a scrambles check list that was sent outtoall scrambles- throwing clubs for changes, suggestions, etc? And, how we reminded you in this column and through District 37 correspondence to get them back to Mike Hinshaw who is straw-bossing this thing? Twenty-two were sent out, we got two back, on time were the Sinners and the Jack Rabbits. Where, may I aSk, are the rest of 'em? Don't bother sending them in now, it's too late. The District has gone ahead and is doing what has to be done, printing up the check list using the draft as the basis of it. So the next time you have a complaint about how things are being run, remember you had a chance and didn't do It. Ah well, It's still a great sport!
