MEET THE DEALER By W.M. Askins Art by B.E.R. Service Mr. Motorcycle In Arizona is Buddy Stubbs, the state's Harley-Davidson dealer, with offices In Phoenix. Today Buddy is a business man In the motorcycle industry. He spends his working days in his otflces on McDowell Road; while his heart remains in cycle racing. driving downpour, in 1965, I crashed In spectacular fashion. I was in the middle or the 100 mile an hour lett-hand sweeper in the infield when my engine blew. I bounced and skidded all the way past Lake Lloyd and into the next right hand turn. I was released from Halifax Hospital the next day withafewbrokenbones and looking like a chunk of raw meat," Buddy recalls. "I realized that I had to quit racing. I came to "Phoenix to become the HarleyDavidson dealer. ThIs is the best place in the world to quit racing - because there isn't any. "1 still love racing and a day doesn't go by that I don't get that old urge to get on a KR and give It hell! There's only one thing better to do and that's what I'm doing. "I'm a lite member of the A.M.A. Been a member for all of a quarter of a century, having joined at the tender age of 4. "I belii:!ve that the A. M.A. is the greatest organization in the world. I also believe that the Harley-Davidson is the greatest motorcycle in the world. And, take It from me, A.M.A. racing is the greatest sport in the world. And, to me, the greatest people In the world are those involved In It. "As far as the future goes - this is It - the H-D dealer for Arizona in PhoeniX. "The greatest cycle racer of all time? I'll tell you who he Is. He's the guY who won the last A.M.A. championshipI" "The motorcycle is the story of my lite. I was riding on a cycle when my mother was carrying me, before I was born. My father was Carl Stubbs, the Harley-Davidson dealer of Decatur, Ill. I must have ridden at least a million miles with my father and mother before I was 10. "At the age of 10 my father taught me to ride alone. And that was the unforgettable year when he gave me my first cycle, a 125 in 1950. "Until I was 21 1 raced In sportsmen events in Illinois. Then I got my professional license and started racing. "As a novice I was one of the top riders In the nation in TT and flat track. "As an amateur I won the 100-mlle road race at Daytona in 1963. The same year I won the 25- mile road race at Windber, Penna., lapping the entire field. "I was always my best In road-racing events, but I also won my share of dirt track races, too. "I learned motorcycles thoroughly. I worked In my Dad's shop as a mechanic from the age of 12 on. Before I started racing I went to the Harley-Davidson factory for two years. "As a racer, I built and tuned all of my own equipment. "I know motorcycles, as I know nothing else. 1 know the people in cycling. Oh, but I do miss all of the excitement and thrills of racing. "Now at the ripe old age of 29, I'm happily married, and In the business of selling and servicing cycles."
