June 27,The 250cc Yamaha with Mike Patrick aboard has become almost unbeatable as he racked uP another desert win, with a four minute lead over his team-mate Phil Bowers on another Yamaha, tuned by Patrick. The start was three miles out and the riders rode through the pits atter the start then jumped on the main course. This gave the spectators a good look at the leaders as they came down ooe side of the canyon and across the wide valIey and uP the steep hill and out the other side. The leader at the top of the hill was #7 J.N. Roberts on a 360 Husky, Gary Conrad 00 another Husky and Patrick. After fltty-flve minutes you could hear the leader coming into the pits and It was Gary Conrad with Patrick three minutes behind. Roberts had run into trouble and dropped out. Patrick moved into the lead when hard luck Conrad got a flat tire on the second loop and Patrick held It all the way to the finish Une at the end of the third loop. Bowers pulled in second followed by James Martino 00 a Husky, Gary Grltfin '16x, Bultaco mounted took fourth. Larry Mulock '567x a new 250cc rider placed his Yamaha in seventh spot to take first amateur. Dutty Hambleton '3D rode his big Triumph in for ninth overall to take first open amateur followed by Darryl Ellis H62x who took second 250cc amateur. Barry Bubar '11 Ro... Wrigbt beld the lead to tile second check where he fouled a plug In the sandwash. Morgan toot over tile lead. but Terry Clark also on a Hodab. bad moved uP to second and was DOW pushing Morgan hard. Coming into tile pits they were wheel to wbeel with lfu'k Rader 128 another yoong charger raoning a close third. Clark led It out of the pits and was determined not to be passed and be wasn't as Morgan ~ second blew a rear wheel in the heat atbaWe. Wrtcbt had changed plugs and moved lIP to second and that Is bow they finished. !teD Buckspan 1244 pulled on his SS HodUa to take third and c1alm first amateur. Gene Oannady was fourth onaSllchs. The two champs were breathing deep; bang!, the gate went uP, and Woods took the outside, maIdng wide radius slides with Platt going Inside, pinhooldng the turns. Each went around four times using two cootrasting ,styles, and went, nay! FLEW, across the finish, side by cotton-plcldn' sldel Ain't It grea,t to see the fans on their feet again? Cec sbowed champion blood by adaPting so quickly, and what can you say about Rick? Only two years on that thing? Lizardsl Nutter and Woods really diced It In the second scratch semi-final. Rick was goIng around a ditterent way each time tryIng to get rid of Sonny, and in so doing almost laid it down in the number three turn on the last lap. But somebody "Larned him good" as he caught It and wheeUed across the ever-present finish Une. A strong race that earned Nutter and Woods even more members for their already growing fan clubs. Funny, I didn't hear one single horsepower argument in the stands either. Good omen for bike racing. In the Scratch Final, a real race loomed on the horizon, with Woods, Nutter, Ellage, and Aurandt Uned uP. Theriders revved, the gate went uP, they blasted out and Nutter fell down in the first turn, disappointing the more knowledgeable race tans. They saw a possible uPset subside in a cloud of "Sonny-dust". Lotta competition between tbose two. A shot of excitement hit the tans though, as Norm Ellage right at the tinish unleashed his jet-powered uranium stockpile and nabbed second by the length of the word Avrandt used, when he realized he'd been bad. The announcer at this point requested that the tirst- time spectators make a joyful noise; sort of a Gallup Poll. Hot dog, you should have heard 'em. Balm for the soul. Two more Match Races between Woods and Platt ensued. Cec, still having trouble with the mini-track fell in the second match, but atter getting uP, he made a full lock el. U
