four minute lead over his team-mate
Phil Bowers on another Yamaha, tuned

The start was three miles out and the
riders rode through the pits atter the

This gave the spectators a good look at
the leaders as they came down ooe side
of the canyon and across the wide valIey
and uP the steep hill and out the other
side.
The leader at the top of the hill was
#7 J.N. Roberts on a 360 Husky, Gary
Conrad 00 another Husky and Patrick.
After fltty-flve minutes you could hear
the leader coming into the pits and It was
Gary Conrad with Patrick three minutes
behind. Roberts had run into trouble and
dropped out. Patrick moved into the lead
when hard luck Conrad got a flat tire on
the second loop and Patrick held It all
the way to the finish Une at the end of
the third loop. Bowers pulled in second

COSTA MESA cont'd.
was announced that Rick Woods, U.S.
Speedway Champion, and Cec Platt, Austra11an Team Ohampion, would run a four
lap match race. If Ben F rankl1n bad flown
b1s key Idle over the fairgrounds that
night, the electricity In the air would
have zotted his Idte right out of the sky.
The fans were waiting... The two
champs were breathing deep; bang!, the
gate went uP, and Woods took the outside,
maIdng wide radius slides with Platt
going Inside, pinhooldng the turns. Each
went around four times using two cootrasting ,styles, and went, nay! FLEW,

Nutter and Woods really diced It In the
second scratch semi-final. Rick was goIng around a ditterent way each time tryIng to get rid of Sonny, and in so doing
almost laid it down in the number three
turn on the last lap. But somebody
"Larned him good" as he caught It and
wheeUed across the ever-present finish
Une. A strong race that earned Nutter
and Woods even more members for their
already growing fan clubs. Funny, I didn't
hear one single horsepower argument in
the stands either. Good omen for bike
racing.
In the Scratch Final, a real race loomed on the horizon, with Woods, Nutter,
Ellage, and Aurandt Uned uP. Theriders
revved, the gate went uP, they blasted out
and Nutter fell down in the first turn,
disappointing the more knowledgeable
race tans. They saw a possible uPset
subside in a cloud of "Sonny-dust".
Lotta competition between tbose two. A
shot of excitement hit the tans though,
as Norm Ellage right at the tinish unleashed his jet-powered uranium stockpile and nabbed second by the length of
the word Avrandt used, when he realized
he'd been bad.
The announcer at this point requested
that the tirst- time spectators make a
joyful noise; sort of a Gallup Poll. Hot
dog, you should have heard 'em. Balm
for the soul.
Two more Match Races between Woods
and Platt ensued. Cec, still having trouble with the mini-track fell in the second
match, but atter getting uP, he made a
