We predict that the Idea wlll on In the west and soon motorcycle parks from Carlsbad to Castle Rock wlll host bigger and better Cycle Circuses. Everybody gets to see all kinds of motorcycle events. Saturday's festival started with the AMA-sanctloned grass track TT sponsored by the Lightweights M.C. It featured Jim Wilson wlnnlngboth the 250cc and open classes on his galloping Greeves. The 100cc class went to Novice Grant D. Lovelady, a Yamaha rider, followed by Gary Little and Chris Morland on Hodakas. It was Chris's first race. Larry Bird led the 125cc flights, followed closely by three Buls, and It was here that Gary BaIley's Penton blew wblle be was leading, scattering the DeW 4-petal reed manifold recently installed by tuner Tom Turner. Wblle the TT was ecbolng through the Carlsbad canyons, the lightweigbt Production Road Race got under way. About 35 under 200cc stockers were set to go the 198.9 mile distance, with two riders apiece sharing the pilot's seat. Tbls San Diego AFM-sanctloned pavement chase was every bit as exciting as the best grands prIX road races we have seen. It was a true test of mach1ne endurance, ba nclll ng, brakes and horsepower. By the end of the grind the bikes that couldn't stand the pace bad dropped out, but the 200cc SuzukI entered by Ocelot Engineering, a well-known San Bernardino dealer, was still going strong, Geoff Mazon at the controls. He won the 1st overall share of the $1,000 prize money along with 2l-yearold Dave Damron, proprietor of Ocelot. Also perking along strongly were the 100cc Yamaha of Pat Evans and Don Vesco and Rudy GalIndo's 125. They won their classes. The race bad begun at 12 Noon and fln1shed a CouPle of ticks before 3 p.m. for a dazzlI ng average speed of 73.21 mph. Only four d the orlglnal starters falled to fln1sb, which speaks very well d the quality of loday's stock 11gbwelgbt motorcycles. As soon as the road race winners were flagged In, the Elimination Hlllclimb event began, honcho'd by the California Moto-Sport Club. Lacking a suitable blll, the contest was merely an uPblll dirt drag race with a jog In It" But the winners may be justly proud of their trOPhies, for It was the same course for all and tiny J. Solis got his first 1st place trophy by wlnnlng the m1n1bike class on a Honda. Now the crowd was growing restless, waiting for Evel Knievel to do his tblng. Wbeelle contest exb1b1t1ons entertained the gallery with Nicholson, Wilson and Evans of the Southern California Trials Assn. doing tblngs on one wheel that most of us can't even do on two. Little Greg Lertz tilted his Powell mln1cycle uP on the back donut like be could have gone on forever. Sunday dawned cloudy and warm as overnight campers, hundreds of them, awoke to the circus sound of call10pe music piped over the Carlsbad P.A. system. It was soon punctuated by'the staccato mus1c of motorcycles warming uP and the 133-acre park began to fill uP with bikes, vans, campers, cars and people. The CMC final motocross 01. the Golden State .. TrIp to England" series led off the day, with the S<'"TA trials going on simultaneously all around the park. Shortly, the 300 mile open class AFM Production Road Race exploded off the mark and there were motorcycles racing all over the place (including, unfortunately, the pits, the parklng10tandtheinfleld 01. the road course). Everyone was a participant. There were few spectators who were not drawn Into the action. As soon as the road race f1n1shed, Evel Knieve1 moved his ramps apart and executed a beautltul jump, (see story In this Issue). The Sideback Association, after patiently waiting all day, througb several delays, finally got a chance to put on a short exb1bitlon, but the course was clogged with wandering people, motorcycles and cars. They wisely cut the demonstratiOll Short, to the disappointment of the 3-wheel fans. By 6 p.m. Carlsbad Raceway was virtually empty. The Midway was taken down and stored unW next time. It was great fun. And even the homegolng traffic was 11ght, to cap off a perfect Cycle Circus Weekend.
