Running a prearranged program of handicap and scratch races, Jerry Falrcbilds' International Speedway Assn. had the top riders handicapped 80 yards with six men in a heat and as a result the only top rider to gain the handicap main was Sonny Nutter who t1nlshed second in his heat to Bill Cody. Aced out in their respective heats because they were unable to move UP through the traffic were U.S. Champion Rick Woods, and AustralJan Champion Ces Platte. Platte had trouble all evening on the small track which is about 1/4 as big as be is used to running and in his beat, be went down in the corner and so failed to transfer to the main events in the scratch events. Ron Miller again lived UP to his tans expectations as his orbiting Eso again went for the fence as Feets MiDert Salem Oregon Motocross - 6/1/69 250cc Sr. Class 1st Bill Cook - CZ 3rd Garry Seeley - CZ 4th Don Yates - CZ ACA Motocross - 6/8/69 250cc Jr. Class 1st Chuck Lunde - CZ 2nd Bi II Gomen - CZ 4th Steve Lunde - CZ 500cc Jr. Class 1st Mark Blackwell - CZ 250&500cc Shamrocks Motocross - 5/30/69 250cc Expert Class 1st John Maynard - CZ 3rd Jim Bentley - CZ 250cc Novice Class st Chuck Lunde - CZ 168 MOlD-CROSS WORlD CHAMPIONSHIPS Riders: 250cc, Joel Robert-500cc, Paul Friedrichs JAIA-CI GllfS RBGGfD DfPflDABllRY IHAIIiIS IORlD CHAMPIOISHIPS BEE YIIUII JAWA-CZ IIULEII RIll WIIIIIIIIII JlEIIFIIIIMAIICE! CALIF. 90019 went down in front of Ron and Ron hit his machine and flew about three feet into the air and when be came down again, Ron just about kept it under control, but finally lost it as it dove for the pit wall. He knocked down One of the movable sections. '!be third scratch heat endeared Rick Woods to the hearts of the spectators as he jumped into the lead and proceded to show them wbat this speedway thing was all about. Even though be was a balf-alap ahead of second place man, the tans were 011 their feet cheering him as he hurtled around this oval with a speed that they had not dreamed possible. As be came out of each corner crossed up, he would pick UP the froot wheel and carry it in the air while sIDl crossed uP unID he had straightened it out for the run down the chute. As Rick took the win going away, the standing ova~on from the crowd was deafening. After the intermission, they held the first of a series of two-out-of-three match races between Rick Woods and Ces Platte. Ces seemed to prefer the inside line through the corners as be made Rick go the hard way around the outside and even though Platte would hook his froot wheel inside of the inside track marker, he beat Rick out by just inches. '!be secood time out, Rick passed Ces on the outside and Ces spun out to the infield and Rick went on to an easy win, m: 'dug it one apiece. After the scratch semis and wbat they called a class B Consolatloo, the scratch t1naI was held and it was the opinion of most of the riders that this was the race that should have been at the end of the program as Rick Woods, Sonny Nutter, Norm Elledge and DickArandt did hattle. Right off the line, Elledge 8.l\d Nutter collided and Sonny went down to put him out of the race. Rick Woods went on to take the win in his spectacular fashion. Elledge placed second with Arandt in third. '!be handicap final had Mike Konle on the 0 yard line and he took the lead and looked like he was going to hold it aver Bill Cody who led for one lap before losing it to Mike, but then Konle went down in the corner; Bill took the lead again, but only momentarily as Kenny Brown got under him and then Cody went down as Kenny went on for the win with Terry Graham second and Sonny Nutter third. '!be third match race between Rick and Ces was the last event and one that left the spectators with the urge to come back for more as they fought it out tooth and nail with neither one giving an inch and then Woods made a fantastic charge out of the corner to take the lead and the win with only Inches separating him and Ces.
