La•• Uloffic:ial Wi. .r Of AFM Three-Hundred Miler By Eric RaIts Photos by Donna Lucas & Dennis Greene CARLSBAD, CAL" June 15, 1969-Mtke Lane was declared tenative winner of the AFM 300-miler at Carlsbad Raceway, Sunday June 15th. Lane rode a 500cc Suzuld to victory after most of the threecylinder entries fell out with mechanical problems. Results of the race were held up by protests and will not be ava.llable for several days. Jack Simmons pushed his Norton into an early lead and let everyone chase him until he sJddded out at the batrpin with a locked tranny and was unable to coolinue. '!be team at Bill Manley and Dave Smith took over the lead at tblspolntand began pl11ng up an advantage that was to last unt11 their brakes failed. Lane led for about the last tb1rty laps 00 his Crawford Chevrolet sponsored Suzuk1. Lane held an average speed at 79 mph for the 3 boor and 46 minute race. Tom steele lost control at his Kawasald. Three b1asting UP the hill out at the pit area and went at! the rc.d into some deep ruts. He escaped the spectacular 100 mph acc1dent with a cODCussion.
