June 15 - By postIng wins in two out of three of the motos in the hotly contested 250Cc expert class and theo coming from beh1nd in a whirlwind finish to win the Lucky Yamaha sweepstakes, Ward Ring of NatlooalClty, riding the Jon Knapp-tuned Yamaha, took the lion's share of honors here today. Jim Chitwood, mounted on a Don Vesco Yamaha pressed him in the first moto and beat out Ring'S team mate, Carl Byers for second. In the second Moto when Ring saw that Byers was a cinch for second he perml tted him to pass to build up points for the Lucky Yamaha team but holding 17·)'e_ld Debbie Greenl. broucllt her bIkini with her from San Francllco to award the trophy to Ward RI ne. off the efforts Of Earl Barker on the Southbay Yamaha. in the third mota, Ring outperformed an entire new bunch of contenders. His team mate went out with a seized engine. The Open expert cootest saw Myron (The Red Baron) Carter, a talented Poway teenager, who does all his own tuning, Ward Rlne. I I he undelutable? decisively turn back Norton team mates Don Matthews and Rich Rlbley, who ride for Mike'S Speed Tuning, to capture the fracas. Of particular concern to your reporter in this race was a nasty spill In the 2nd moto • on the South sweeper involving Triumph riders Dan Duncan and Ellis Boles. Dan dropPed his scooter and Ellis ran over him. Dan Is the Service Manager of Valley Motorcycle Sales, EI Cajon's Honda, Triumph and BMW dealer and Ellis Is his chief mechanic. As my BMW was scheduled for a service appointment on Monday 1was particularly happy to see both boys In good condition after the race although Dan sported a K-70 tread mark across his middle-. The powder puff race Is gaining more attention as the girls are prepping for the big lOOCc Grand Prix to be held at South Bay OIl July 6th. Debbie Reon repeated her win of last week ahead of Shirley Newsom and Sue Faucher. All three girls were on Hodakas. Butch Montgomery led the new cropof lOOCc novice riders across the f1n1sh, followed by Hodaka mounted Phil Col1Ie and Kawasald pilot John Montez. Elevenyear-old 100Cc Novice Dave Emde finIshed second in his heat race here today in his first competition start and papa Floyd was just as happy for him ashe was that older brother Don Emde f1n1shed second In the AMA Novice class at the Laconia Nationals on Saturday. The next motorcycle program in the S.D. area will be at the Autodromo de Tijuana on June 29th followed by the 100Cc Grand Prix at Southbay on independence Day weekend. We'll see you all there. (Results on page 20) Hillbillies Trial Lauded By Rich EatOl"' OAKHURST, CAL., June 8, 1969 - The small roadside town of Oakhurst, Calif., nestled high in the Sierra 50 mUes north of Fresno, buzzed with the sound of trucks laden with trial type cycles as they headed yet Northward to the site of the HIllbillies M. C. English Trial Sunday. The HIllbillles had set up a beautiful course utl1lz1ng a 10 mile loop through the evergreen forest. Conditions were overcast with a brief thunder shower just after sun- up which settled the dust and provided an Ideal setting for the Trials. Many compliments about the layout of the observed sections and course routIng were paid to the Hillbillies by the 45 contestants. Strongest club participation came from the enthusiastic Pacific International Trials Society which swept the Trials in all classes and took home most all of the trophies. The P.I.T.S. group praiSed the HI1lbillles the most vigorously of all. The Southern Calif. Trials Assn. was conspicuous by Its' absence, and missed out on the variety of observed sections used.
