Tbese two men and their mounts were very evenly matched and all it took was a bobble on the uphill switchback by Byers, for Baker to get past on the last lap. Triumph mounted Earl Barker was able to collect enough points in the Open E)lpE!rt Motos to defeat such District 38 favorites as Myron carter and Don Matthews. Tbe misfortune of Carter and Matthews however should not detract from the masterful ride disPlayed by Barker in his wiD. in the second moto Matthews, who was out in front in the stretch, looked over bis sboulder, and missed seeing Barker sneak by him on the other side'to wiD by a wheel. BSA mounted Matthews captured secOlld honors and steady Jim Harmon brought his Norton in third. Tbere were ten girls on the 110e for the Powder Puff event which made it the largest entry this year. Talented teenager Debbie Reon turned back 1968 defending champion Carol Chiara for the wiD and a newcomer Jeanne Gibson beat out Shirley Newsom for third. Fairgrounds- Speedway Praitice Session II , By Mike Capallte COSTA MESA, CALIF. June 4 - Milne Brothers of Pasadena. opened their new speedway track at the Orange County Fairgrounds for the first practice session last Wednesday night and a host of speedway riders were on hand to give the circuit Its baptism of fire. Tbe practice plan called for riders to go to the starting 110e two at a time and then give It a go for four laps. Tbts made for a gang of two-man events that turned into races Instead of practice. Admission was free so there was a large crowd in the grandstands as Dallas Baker and Terry GrahllIIl went out. lt was Immediately apparent that the cushion 011 the track was too thick. As more riders went out, the track got dangerous in the corners and Greg Haserot did a full-lock wheelie trying to power-slid and had the macb1ne run out from under him. Ron MIller was there with his orbiting Jawa and It tried a rerun of the fence climb he did at Whiteman Stadium, but was only able to get the front wheel over the fence (Kn1evel, you better sign this boy uP). Some of the cushion was removed and that was all that was needed as the riders really started to wall around this tight oval, and alter every "race" the riders received an ovation from the crowd. A duel between Sonny Nutter and Rick Woods not only had the spectators on their feet and cheering, but Rick and Sonny were so engrossed they went for six laps instead of four. Here are some of the riders comments when asked what they thought of the track: RICK WOODS - "It bugged me at first because It is smaller than any track we have ridden yet, but after I got the right gear ratio, I was getting around quick and having a ball!" SONNY NUTTER - "All it needed was to grade ott that heavy cushion so we could get good slides and then we were able to steer through the corners and control them safely in a packl" SAMMY TANNER - "It was the SllIIle problem of too much cushion that they had when they first ran speedway at South Gate, but they know what to do now. Tbe turns are a little tight for the length of the stralghts, but It makes for a lot of exciting racing!" DALLAS BAKER - "I should know If I like the track or not, I got a close enough look at Itl" GREG HASEROT - "Tbe track Is a little small but we can gear for it. What I like Is the excellent lighting, It is just like day11ght out there!" RON MILLER - "I was a little hard on the equipment, but I like 11. I'll be ready to go on the l3thl" From the showing they made Wednesday night, the men to watch on this track will be Riiik,.woodS, Sonny Nutter, Greg Haserot, sammy Tanner, Bruce Haserot and Ron MiUl!r. Opening night tor this track, located just ott Newport BlVd. south of the San Diego Freeway Is Frlday night, June 13 (lucky Friday the ThIrteenth!) Sonny Nutt. I.ads Paul Cons.".,., Nom Elled.. and Bill Cody In this spMdwly pbolD by Dan Mahony.
