Frank Durso set faste st time Saturday to win the open class at Bay Mare's professional hillclimb. Durso. from san Jose. picked up top money with an e.t. of 12.75 seconds riding a 650 BSA. He was almost a full second quicker than number two mao. Tom Elsa. also from San Jose. Third in the open class was Dick Ox ford from Bakersfield riding a 55 in. Harley XLCH. His best time was 13.80. Motocross ace Chuck Minert took his trusty 441 BSA Victor over the top In 16.30 sec. to place first in the 500cc class. Bob Tryon was second. Mike Callalite. riding a '57 Matchless. made show money. In the 250 bracket. Jack Midget. from Downey. placed first on a Bultaco Pursang. e.t.'ing at 17.55. In second was Dick Oxford again, this time riding a 250 Honda. Total prize money was $350, with the lion's share going to Durso in the open class. He netted $85. Frank was also awarded a new helmet from Champion safety Helmets in Canoga Park. Lift: Riders' vl_ of the slope from "e bottom. fso Speedway Mac.ines Now Officially NalDed Jawa By Mike Capallte The familiar Eso motorcycle that bas dominating speedway raclng throughout the world bas been renamed a Jawa by the Jawa-owned concern that manufactures them. Jawa purchased the Eso factory some years ago and continued to manufacture the Eso speedway machine with some improvements of their own, but retained the Eso name on the speedway machine. Recently they have quit making the Eso and have started making the Jawa speedway machine which means that they have changed the decal on the gas tank and made a rockerbox cover that bas Jawa cast into it instead of Eso as they are still the same machine. been Hi-Hats Scrambles By C.D. McCarthy MARTINEZ, CAL., May 25, 1969-Crowd pleaser of the day at Martinez was the 250Cc class. The large amount of entries and close action under the shade trees made for a full day of racing. Fred Bush and James Thompson dueled for first place in the 250 amateur main. Thompson took over the lead for good in the sixth lap for the win. 250 Expert George Carter did what everyone expected. He got of! the line !irst and ran away with the race. in the 100 Novice main, PhUAoderson and Richard Johnson passed each other numerous times before Jobosoo took the win. Ron Orr of the Hi-Hats led the parade of 650 Novices. Open expert Ron Norgaard did a fine job and won going away from Don Smith and Nate Topelar. (Results on page 27) ASCOT TT THIS SAT. The big American MotorcycleAssociation racing circuit will be in action at Ascot Park both Friday and Saturday evenlngs (June 6-7) with flat-track action on Friday and the steeplechasers on Saturday. Post time for the first race at both sessions is 8: 15 Skip Van Leeuwen, perhaps the nation's top steePlechaser, will head the field for the Saturday card. Skip has been almost unbeatable over the !ive- eights- mUe layout at 183rd and Vermont Avenue.
