Mills BAY MARE, CAL., MAY 30, 1969-The Shamrocks always have been one of the leading clubs in District 37 and they proved It again Memorial Day by throwIng a real good motocross. The course was tough, like a motocross Is suPposed to be. There was a neat mud hole, and the muck and mire severely tried the patience of some riders. The more canny ones picked their way through it with no trouble. The correct way through It was spotted by one one 500 Novice but several of the 500 Amateur-Experts doped It out In no time at all. From the mud hole the course led down a neat sandy stretch where one of the exciting events of the day took place. Dick Camp (Bultaco) and Jim Connolly (Greeves) got tangled uP with each other and Camp dragged the Greeves along for a bit at full throttle until Connolly finally balled off Into the bushes. Camp didn't go down but It was a bit of a shake-uP for both men. If there was a race of the day, It has to be the Howard Mendenhall, Joe Veillon, John Rice ride in the second 125 moto. Then after this was after and done with, Chuck Minert turned on the action. It's not often you see the pits come to attention to watch a race and in both these cases they did. John R. got going late, when the rest of his class were already over the hills and far away, and everyone was thinking, could he do It? Lap after lap there was John war king further and further up closer to the leaders. He finally nailed the third and second place riders and set sail for the leader who had one heck of a lead built up. On the yellow flag he over-cooked It trying to pass him after the mud hole and went salling off his sachs. It was a_ride to remember! Two ways to fly, at Bay Mare. Chuck Minert on his trusty BSA Victor won his first mota with no challenge although Lonnie Peterson gave Ita good go. In the second, Feets came off the line drag-racing John Maynard (C-Z) to the top of the hill then knew he couldn't hold it and vanished off the course and over the handlebars. This moto was run on shorter time than the first, and once Rible" Sharp Share Tijuana TT 100cc WI ....r St...e $Iwp. By Bill Harmer TIJUANA, B.C. MEXICO, June 1- Rich Ribley, riding the Garrett tuned Matchless, swept the Open class event and the 15 lap flat track sweepstakes while his stablemate Steve Sharp, riding the only four-stroke machine in the 100cc class, a Gar~, posted a win In that class and a close second In the sweepstakes to share the spotlight before 1100 enthusiastic Mexican fans at the Autodromo de Tijuana here today. Because of small advance notice of the event and the lure of other holiday activities, the rider entry list was not large but those who entered got plenty of riding as each event consisted of four motos of six laps each over the beautifully prepared, quarter-mile course. Ribley showed real class by easily capturing all four of the Open class motos while C. Norris, mounted on a BSA, annexed second and Roberto Gomez of Tijuana riding a Honda 350 looked good taking third. Wlnnlng the 100cc event was no small task for Steve Sharp as he turned back Suzuki mounted Jim Casey and expert Brldgestone jockey Jim Dunn. Dunn bad victory In his grasp after winning the second main and leading the final one when an Ignition wire parted and puthim out of the race. Kawasaki ace Joe Phillipson, who bas been absent from the local tracks for some time, found the groove today and captured the 250cc fracas by winning the first three motos. Knowing that he had the event won, Joe played It coolin the final moto but still finished It In second spot. R. Schmersal on a Yamaha. outpointed Don Swlnko to take second honors in the class. The largest grouP to run was the 200cc class which was won by Kawasaki mounted Bob Darnell but not without a lot of trouble from Kawasaki pilot Chuck Palmer who Is improving rapidly. Another Kawasaki streak, R. Dollarhide, finished third. Because the program was over early, program director Earl Roloff added the flat track event, starting the 100Cc bikes about a lap ahead of the Open machines and spacing the other classes In between. It took nearly the entire 15 laps for open rider Rich Ribley to pass lOOCc pilot Steve Sharp, a feat which no ooe else was ahle to accomplish. The program was enjoyable and outside of a little traffic jam at the border, everyone bad a great time and they are looking forward to another TI in TTown. They're hoping for a Uttle more advanced notice however. (Results on page 26) again we wondered could he possibly make It? .But Minert has always been able to squeeze a little more speed out of himself and his bike when needs must and he barely made It. By the time the flag fell he was uP into second which gave him the over-all win. It was another ant to remember! John Maynard (C-Z) was winner of the 250 Expert bash with a really good ride. Steve Bast (Husky) tried hard, too hard In the first one and crashed badly on the downhill. This really was a nasty downhill! As Mel ShaPiro of the Viewfinders sald after his two finishes on his Greeves, "It wasn't bad, but you just couldn't touch anything going down." One 125 Novice on a brand new Hodaka dropped It, didn't look like he knew what to do when plck- ing up a scooter that's down on a hill and vanished head first twice Into the bushes as other bikes came down towards him. He ended uP dragging his bike down to the bottom and wasn't seen again! Shamrocks drew the starting positioos from a box of plngpong balls each mota, with starting places clearly marked on the line. The officials on the line and most important, the naggers, really knew what they were about. They even provided two ambulances so racing could continue if a rider was taken away. One was and racing happily continued, until a dumb spectator on a road bike tried to come down a hill, didn't make it and got hauled off making the racer set watt.
