Silverthorn on a Penton, with S. Ellsworth and Tom Raw 2nd and 3rc:!, both on BuItacos. Balley missed getting into gear and consequently was dead last up the hill. After a really good ride he came in 4th. In the seconc:l 125 Expert moto. Tom Rapp outdragged everybody up to till! first turn, ended 2nd with Bailey 8rd. Silverthorn showed them the way home. Bailey didn't run in the third mota. Tom Rapp ran llv.ly with it, which gave Silverthorn the overall win for three firsts. Winners 01 the 125 Jr. class were Bruce Baron on a Sachs, B. Vacca(Bul). and A. Wurtzell (Penton). Jim Meyers Sr. ran his first race today, with ' DIrty Old Man" in big letters across bis back. LIke son like father • Next class was 250 Jr. Div. 2. M. Pritchard was the winner, followed by Sachs riders A. Lund and M. Drews. Bailey got a good start in the first mota 01 the 250 Expert and was never headed. Tim Hart was 2nd on a Montesa, and Jim wUson 3rd. The second beat looked like a repeat unt1l the last hundred yards. Bill SllverthomzapPedGary going up that steep bill just before the checker. GoiJlg into the third maio, Tim Hart led into the 1st turn, pushed by Bailey. Bailey got.him 00 the 3I:cUap and was himself being pressed by Silverthorn again! BaUey didn't seem to be fighting very hard. knowing that even with a 2nd be "WOuld stW bave the overall win, 80 Silverthorn ~ thatbeat too• Gary was 1st overall 00 his Greaves, Silverthorn aDd his Husk;y were 2Dd, and Hart, Mootesa, third. Jim WDson was 4th, Greeves again, and Tom Raw "WaS 5th 00 the first moioeross astride .his new Sherpa. Next, the 250 Jr. Dtv. 1 was WIllI by J. West (Yamaba), 2nd was G. Harris (Hnsky) .aDiI 3rd B. 1llI.rroo (C.z.). PaIil Harber's younger brolber JoIm ran in this class and although not quite fast enough yet, 1IQS doing quite _11 until the third mota when he CI:llSbed very bard and was whisked off to· the hospital to see If his leg was broken. The doctor said no, and be was allowed to return home to sunny Las Vegas. In the first mota of the 250 Jr. DiVisioo 2, Jim Meyers Jr. v.lS I'lIIID1ng 2nd and hit a marker post, putting a very deep cut in his leg, and himself on the ground. He got up and caught the 1elIder again bot unforiuDately was a lap behind. S. Oliver was ered1ted with the win and B. BleyeDberg was 2nd, both on Yamahas, with G. Gerlich Jr. (HuSky) 3rd. Meyers understandablY just didn't seem to bave the sam.e push in the two last matos. The "really big shoo " F eets Minert did it to everybody this time, far 1st overall on his Beezer, with Gary Bailey. 2nd,1lnd Jim WIlson 3rd. But what atria d motoel Bailey just didn't seem to be with It in the first beat, and "QII)y" finished third, but Wilson and Feets were fighting tooth and toog through the Wbale race and -wbeo the beat was over they carried it 00 verbIlly, really hot and heavY about prqler lines through cor- ners. It was the devil himself looking out d BaileY's eyes in the second heat. He had to leave the power on at least 25 feet past wbere any mortal would dare, but he stUl made it around the first turn in 1st place and stayed there to winl Wilson was 2nd and Minert 3rd until the lastlap when be was passed by Hart• Bailey got a Totten start in the last mota, missing a par and coming through the first turn almost last. He was fourth at the llIllI at the first lap, and-Oil lbe fifth lap Feets shut the door really bard on Hart, forcing Mm off the traCk, taIdDg Wilson with him.
