ORANGE, CALIF <' May 11 - Although
Allen Powell set a new track record at
Saddleback Park's mini-bike races Sunday, it was the special entry of Maywood
Honda that won first place gold.
Powell set record time of 42.5 seconds
during time trials on a Powell Trail
Scooter utilizing a stock 5 hoP. Briggs
& Stratton engine. 11 looked like Allen
would continue to dominate the open
class racing as he has done ever since
the mini-bike series began this year.
However, the lights have been on late
at night at the Honda dealership in Maywood, Calif., and Sales Manager Greg
Kearney broke out a 9lcc Mini-Trail
with special suspension that enabled him
to end the unbroken string of wins of
the Powell marque.
By the time the trophy dash was announced, Greg had his Honda gearing
sorted out. He jumped off the line an9
pulled ahead at the first turn with Powell
right behind. They swapped the lead in a
couple of close duels. At the finish, It
was Kearney's Mini-Trail Just ahead of
Powell. In third was Keenan Harvey on a
snappy but tempermental McCulloch.
Greg Lersch, ten-year-old trials pro,
was fourth.
Six-year-old Clay White, a consistent
winner In these bi-monthly minature TT
scrambles, won all three motos In his
class for overall win in the littlest-guy
bracket. The Bellflower, Calif., lad rides
his 3 hoP. mini-wailer in superb style.
Second was John Frampion.
Greg Lersch tallied up two wins and a
second place In his motos for a first
overall in the 9-to-ll age group riding
a Powell. He'S amostimpressiveyoungster who has learned his trials lessons
well.
