He still carries the same cc!s, but it's hot. He's constantly working on bls macblne, making improvements and try- . ing oui dUferent gear ratios. Mike is also married and bas three daughters, aged 8, 5, and one. His machine Is a 500cc Suzuki with a modified X6 trame. He says It handles very well, and he'S well-satisfied with its performance. To look at these two guys together, you would swear them to be brothers Instead of cousins. They are both carpenters for MUine Bu1lders in Del Mar. Mike Is 27, but Cbarlle, at 26 (six months younger) is his boss. They were both born in Calttornia, Mike in Glendale, Cbarlle in Los Angeles. It seems that whatever they do, they do It together, including getting born in the same state. Kenny Young, the owner and operator of Two Cycle Modification Center in Pomona is thelr sponsor. I did not see many "old" cycles around Show Low, but on this day of May 3rd, when local enthusiasts decided to bave some tun there were plenty of shiny new ones. He spends many hours burning the mldnilibt oU, personally getting special parts ready for both machines whenever they are needed. He also acts as thelr technical advisor, giving them the benefit of his 30 years of experience to help them get the best speeds possible. Cbar11e and Mike make a COuPle of trips every week to Pomona to see Kenny, plus the many phone calls they make to check out dUferent plans they bave figured out or to make a progress report. Tbis gets a little tight on the budget once in awhile, because thelr phone bills are rWlOing around $50.00 per month, each. Mike said that it's getting so bBd that he almost bas to get down on his knees and beg to use the phone anymore. Cbarley is the more intense and serious of this dragging team, but he can come uP with a remark once in awhile that will bring on a big smile. One day, after baving several earth-shattering problems, he said he was almost.ready to "divorce". his machine because she was so much trouble. After he said It, he picked out a tool, grinned, and went right back to work on his "wedded bliss". Mike is more of a relaxed sort of person and likes to kid aroWld. When asked what thelr dispositions 'are like around home, he piPed UP with one word "MEAN". It just ain't so. They are a COuPle of swell guys, on or off the drag strip. Although there bad been no plans lie advertise the event - this was to be the first motorcycle event in the recent history of Show Low, and the organizers did not want it to "get out of hand." the word did get around, and Gary McWherter showed uP from Scottsdale, about 200 miles distant. Tbis was to be Gary's fust racing adventure, too; so he and the event went hand in band. After some practice runs resulting in a few cracked exhaust pipe brackets and nuts and bolts lost here and there, repairs were made and the fust heat got gressed, and allll&reed that it was "the greatest." A special unscheduled event saw seve~l men on BSAs and Triumph machines taking tries at some of the steeper, higher sides of the pit and meeting with success.
