Should motorcycllsts fall to brtng some pressure to bear, the area wUl be completely fenced off from any further use at any time. , ~ Accord1ng to the people who are trying so hard to preserve part of this area for motorcycllsts, the problem Is Los Angeles City Councilman John Gibson. Mr. Gibson does not want motorcycllsts In that area. Accord1ng to a spokesman for the 'cycllsts group, which also lncludes Harbor area Chambers of Commerce and the Jaycees, the opposition's statements are approximately the following, "Once we -let the b1ke riders In, we'll never get them Ollt", "Bikes wUl be allowed In there over my dead body," and "we're agaJ.nst It because It's notconststent with the lnteDded use of the area. We've tried for tweDty years to get the park In there and It's not golng to be challged now." The plans for the area that Gibson is for wUl make the area DOW used for tra111ng lnto one large blrd-watehtng faclllty, although the actual sanctuary was to be closer to the sooo-tIO-be-bulld dam and the lake. If G1bsoD bas his way this area wUl be just left a1clDe and not used for anytb1ng. The 'cyliDg grouP or1g1nal1y asked for the use of the land unW sometb1ng else was planned for It which could cooeelvably give riders quite a few years to use It, and also permission to be able to use any land left over from the next developmental stage of the park. Tbelr Idea was a park with boating, fishing, plen1lcing, blrd watching In the quiet hours and a place for motorcycle events. Any local authorities that could be thought of were approached and were very favorable to the Idea, reallz1ng the need for close-ln motorcycle areas that were properlY controlled. The area was canvassed as to resident's reaction. There is no noise problem, and all were favorable ll%Cept for two and one compla1nt was against riders sereamtng uP and down the streets. The Recreation and Parks Commtttee beId a meeting wllere both sides could d1seuss this and tile outcome was the Committee dee1ded this was a localprob!em and tIIat botb part1es sbould settle It ' * - themee1fts, with the Commtss10n w1ll1ng lD a c c e p t the settlement. Therefore, tile Idea do havlDg part do the part as a r1d1ng area is not lost, but we must wort togetber • C01DlCtlman Gibson has repeatedly said he UDderstaDds comp1etl8ly the need for such an area consldertne how things have changed and how popular fam11y motoreyellng is. He has offered b.elp In flnd1ng anotber location for such an area and has suggested several other locations. All these have been cheeked by the 'cycllsts group and have been found lD be too close to seWed,nelgbborhoods where noise and the increase of tra:rf1c would affect residents. We also wish lD point out that even If you personally do not llve In the Harbor area or In the City of Los Angeles, Harbor Park is still publlc land and to develop It further, both State and Federal funds wUl be used besides local monies. Tb1s makes It a cause worth supporting by all because everyone pays Stale and Federallncomes' taxes. Therefore, even If you llve way alit of the loeallty, here is a chance lD say where part of your tax money should go. I How much money? For fencing the area to keep the bikes out, $120,0001 For the development? One million. These are ~ntatlve figures of course, pending bids but that's an awful lot of our money betne spent 011 a development that could benefit us too, along with the blrd people. An unofflclal source says this money has lD be spent now, or Wlll be withdrawn so If It has to be used now, let's make sure we get sometb1ng for it. Part of It belongs to all of us. Here is your chanee to yell and yell loudly. Wrlte to your State Representatives and also let Counctlman G1bsoD mow. what you tb1nII:, plus the MaYor of L.A. (both in eare of CityHall). The 'cycllsts crouP haft some plans made, but It takes more than a small group lD wort on sometb1ng llb this. We must mate the pollt1elanB Teal1ze that there are thousands do us, not just a few who are w1ll1ng to f1ght. Either _ complately lose a marvelous area or we retain it. It's up lD us, now.
