Nutter Nabs Record At Saugus Speedway By Mike Capallte SAUGUS SPEEDWAY, May 9 - The throaty roar of the Class A fuel-burners OIIce again broke the stillness of the night as they returned tor another Friday night of exciting racing. The program wasrun in the style of an FIM race with each rider competing in a number of heats and transfering to the semi's by the number of points garnered in the heats. 'Ibis gave each rider a chance to race against every other rider and also provided the spectators with some of the wildest speedway e.xh.lbitions to date. SoDny Nutter, who has changed over trom a JAP to an Eso alter his 1mpresstve SROwing Ias1 week on a borrowed Eso, surprised the grandstands by taking the win in the style that won him the California State Class A ChampionshiP last year. Then to prove that it wasn't just luck, he proceded to go out in the very next heat race and not only zap Rick Woods, the U.S. Speedway Champion, but set a new track record of 1.01.36 in the seventh heat which he also won handily. . Jlm Ashworth (Eso) was the only injury of the evening when he tangled with Bruce Haserot in a rather spectacular spill which resulted in Jim making the two-block triP to the hospital to get bandaged and to receive a tetanus shot. He was back before the races were over and Is doing fine. As high point man this season, Ste~'€' Bast was determined to make II showing in his semi, and he disaPPointed no one he battled wheel to wheel with Sonny Nutter in the first semi in such a display of rooster- tall spewing full-lock broadslidlng that the cheers were equaJly loud for Nutter for finishing second as they were for Bast for winning. The B main went to Mike Konle who has been showing a lot of improvement lately and will be one to watch as the season moves on. He took t1ie win over Greg Haserot, Ron Miller and Bill Cofy, who was showing a lot of improvement and getting around good when he broke a rear chain and dumped it in a corner. The A Main, although it was Sonny Nutter wire to wire, featured Stev.e Bast and John Carter having a battle royal for . .• secQQd illl!c@..: about tour. lnc~s •.bWIipd Sonny witli Rick Woods rIght tfIelr on TOP PAY FOR TOP MECHAIIIC Excellent shop & dealer needs mechanic immediately.
