The first semi was a hairy, two-man duel between Sonny Nutter and Mulder after Jack 0' Brien lost It In a corner. Nutter was just able to edge Eddie to the wire. Rick Woods (Eso) took the second semi over Larry Helnse1man (JAP) and Homer Knapp (Eso) after a spill put John carter In fourth place and out of the mains. 1be third semi was MIke Konle's second chance to make the A main this season, and he showed determination as he fougbt all the way for the win. agaJnst Sammy Tanner (JAP) and Harlan Bast (Eso). Steve Bast was able to hold off stu Morley (JAP) to win the Jourth Sem[. Nutter took the trophy dash lead with Rick Woods right beside him until Woods had a little bobble and Steve Bast moved up to challenge, but Sonny took the trophy and the kiss from the lovely trophy girl. Ron Miller (JAP) and Bill Todd (JAP) diced for the lead in the C main with Miller finally taking it, third and fourth went to Harlan Bast (Eso) and Homer Knapp (Eso). The B main was one of those unusual races where every eye Is glued'on the second spot instead of the winner. Larry Heinselman took the lead, Sammy Tanner (JAP) and Eddie Mulder, (Eso) dropped right in behind him In second spot and although they were always within striking dlstancl of the lead, It turned into a hattle ben.~ tile two of them as they stayed side-by-side for the full race In a dual-sliding exhlbitloo that bad the crowd roaring as they came out of the last corner and Tanner Inched abead of cop second'. As the starting gate raised, KoD1e leaped into the corner in the lead with Woods right behind him, Nutter tbirdand Bast fourth. Although off to a bad start, it was apparent that Steve was going to be a threat as he hard-charged around Nutter and move up on Woods who was slowly losing ground 011 Konle. 1be crowd was on its feet as Steve was passed Woods and moved up on Konle. Steve would pull up to Mike and be side by side and then Mike would pull away as he was getting terrlflc traction and riding a great race. As they came into the last corner with Konle leading. The crowd could see that Bast was going to make a last effort as he stormed into the corner to move up besides Mike and they both accelerated down the straight togelher. It was ooe of the closest races seen yet with Konle taking it over Bast by about six Inches and when the decision was announced, the cheers and boos from the stands were about even.
