SCRAMBLIN AROUND By Maureen Lee By Maureen Lee We sure hope that most of you were able to get uP to see the Cycle World Show. It was excellent, and some of the new bikes on display were enough to make any scrambler blew his cool. Lately the Spanish machines have dominated, but after what wesawattheSp~rts AI' ena, things look like they're changlllg • Our favorite? Hard to say, but oh my, that new AJS looked great and it would be lovely to see that old marque come back to the fore again. Then the new Yankee was very Impressive and will give fearsome competition, we think. It makes you think a bit doesn't It, about a machine you can run as a twin or single and shift any way you want It! Then the Rickman's Westlake conversions will have something to say too, on the track, as will the Greeves Griffons. Funny, but we're going to miss that old front frame on the Greeves after all these years. It we were personally going to buy anything we could have had at the show? That's easy. The new little 125 Malco rang our chimes, but then a new Hodaka would be nice••• Two private entries that were really something to see were Chuck Mlnert's Goldstar that has certainly seen action, but looks Immaculate and an old 1937 Excelsior Manxman that probably didn't look that good when It was brand new. It was beautltul and made you feel wistful for those great machines of years gone by. We went over to Saddleback last Friday to watch the Viewfinders check out the camera for Paramount's "Little Faus and Big Halsey." It was fascinating. Everett Creach rode his Yamaha around and around with club members racing alongside him many times finding out just where the best place for the camera to be mounted would be. Everett had It taped to his helmet and then on his chest, but that appeared to give too bumpy a ride to say the least! The personable Assistant Director, Terry Morse was charming, and said there'll be no Hells Angels types in this picture and we said hurray! it's always seemed to us that there's enough action and personality conflicts etc. around the racing scene to make a picture with a lot more excitement In It than just taking a bunch of uglies burning down a gas station or just acting like they came down from the trees. Remember the chap who won the 500 Novice race at Corriganville that year It rained so bad, Frank Macklin? He used to work for Norm Reeves, then opened his own store which curtailed his competition activities a bit. He has just been ." appointed to a regional sales managers job with Johnson Motors. Neat, eh? There was an Incident at Perris Sunday we've been asked to mention. It doesn't happen often, but It happens. One guy got pretty uP-tight with the starter about keeping them too long on the Une. Then at one point In the days racing he ran out on the track demanding a restart when his rider dropped It on turn one. Bernie, the starter didn't have to black flag, but he did. You don't have to for only one rider down unless It endangers the rest of the racers, but anyway there was unpleasantness again. Later the guy was going to race but had to be told to leave the Une, he was In no condition to ride a motorcycle. Now, Gerry Burton has often made the point. He sells beer at the track and even the racers are not above drinking it, but learn how to control it or you will be politely but firmly shown the gate. Uyou "" have a real bee! whether you've had a ; couple or not, take I t through the proper "" channels wblch Is the Competition Com- Q" mlttee, and don'tyellattheclubl1f1clals. The CompComm meetlngsaresome!h1ng ~ to see and there's not one steward or Co:l officer In ~!ice now who hasn't been a Z racer or who stlll Isn't actively engaged Co:l In competition and they know all the problems! >. U Ben Bok, the Districts' SecretaryTreasurer was out at Perris Sunday and we can't wait for the next meetings to hear what Ben has to say. He'S a desert man and hadn't been to a scrambles In years. Needless to say he was a little shook at our scrambles nowadays compared to the old ones, and agrees there'll have to be some changes made. We'll keep you posted. d r~------- I ... - MOVING??? ..• .
