How tate were you coming Into It? How I Went To Europe, Raced Motocross And Gre~ In Understanding g, ~ftU4, Dear Mr. Clayton, 'IbIs letter 15 to let everyone know wbat we have been doing here In Europe since we first arrived In England 00 the 27th nf January. I contacted Dave Bickers In Ipswich, about 70 mlles north d London. He invited us to stay with him and his wile while we were In England. We then went by train to ipswich. We stayed with Dave and his wife, Sylvia for about five weeks. I worked with Dave at b1s father's garage every day, and my wile and I dten went to London to slght- see. I rode five times •••••••••••••• RUSS DARNELL is au Ameri- can who i"s living and racing in Europe this season, sponsored by the Husqvarna factory and Edison Dye. •••••••••••••• while we were In England, three tr1aJs, and two motocrosses. I have come to the conclusion that tr1aJs riding 15 mIlCh more dangerous than motorcross! Some d the obstacles we traversed (or attempted to travers) were flat unbelievablel At one event that was In SDOWand Ice in a part-time hllzzard I cleared acomplete sectloo uP to a steep h1U that was the extt. I had a very good runat the h1U In second gear, and as I cleared the top with the front wheel, I shut off to coast over the last fe'll feet. As sooo as I shut z,4!Uldt off, the bike I was on (a Greeves TFS borrowed for the day from Dave's shop), went backwards down the h1U. As I plummeted down the frozen h1.1l, closely followed by my faithful Greeves, I grabbed at passing bushes, clawed at the ground, and alternately yelled obscenities at the EngI1sh score keepers. None at this slowed me down and I f1na11y erasbed, screaming, through the bramble patch located convenlently at the bottom d the h1U. The course markers shook their heads and gave me a"five" • The Greeves tr1aJs machine is very tough so It did not sutter. I came out at ·tt with a few surface punctures, and some scratches 00 my new Illlytona helmet. I the amateur class In· one at the tr1aJs, mIlCh to my surprise. At the two motocrosses, one at Dover, and one at Tilton I got a taste of EngI1sh scrambles and mud. I rode a 400cc Husky for Br1aD Leask at Dover and got a twelfth position as my best for the day. I went to Dover with Dave and Jobn Banks. Jobn 1a a great big friendly guy who 15 very well liked In England. Dave WIlD one leg of the race at Dover, and Bryan Goss won the other. Jobn had trouble all day. The next time I raced was at Tilton, which was the first round d the British Championship. AgaIn I rode the 400 for Bryan Leask. Tilton was very grassy, and there was SDOW on the ground. Very sllcltl In the 500 class, I led the race for the first lap then Dave NicboI, a BSA works rider, passed me wben I missed a shift. won (Continued Next Week) . iNiENsiFIED : : : ' : : : : : =:=:: ~--= HODAKAS BY CROW E Ll;;;iL-..- Temple Cify Kawasal,; Area' 5 leading volume Kawasaki Dealer Complete Parts & Accessories 5663 N.
