The Drag Race Scene
By Dan Zeman
The pot of gold for the July 4th Lions
All-Bike event is starting to fill a little
faster now. Ed Roth of Chopper Magazine rode bis custom three-wbeeler down
to Lions and banded me twenty-five dollars towards the meet.
Also donating was Harley Davidson of
Inglewood for ten dollars. Other donations in the past few weeks were: yours
truly, $25.00, Betty Nichols, $25.00, 2Stroke Modification Center, $25.00, Don
Green, $5.00 and Pete Devlin, $5.00.
This, along with the $1000.00 that Lions
Drag Strip donated gives us a total of
$1,120.00, to date. This is still a long
ways from the $2,000.00 that I'm hoping
for, but there are two months left yet,
so I'm not giving up.
Banzai! You're Out
Jeff Gough took the Top Gold for three
weeks in a row. Joe Smith decided he
would defend the name of Harley-Davidson and put a stop to tbts Triumph domination. Joe showed UP at Lions with b1s
engine mounted in a new frame, so he
wasn't eager to go banzai right off the bat.
When the eliminations came around,
there were seven bikes entered in the
fuel-burning class, so Joe didn't have
much choise. He bad to trust bis engineering.
Joe and Jeff worked down to Just the
two of them and then It was 48 inches of
Jeff's Triumph vs 102 incbes of Joe's
Harley. Both bikes were running poorly
by tbts time and were shooting ducks
. balf- way down the strip. Then both engines seemed to clean at the same time
so it was a close race from start to finish. Joe crossed the finish line first,
turning 9.93 and 149 mph. Jeff took
runner-up with 10.10 and 148 mph.
Boris Murray was also out Sunday and
bad bis two Triumph engines mounted in
a new frame that was out of sight. This
frame is basicaIIy the same design as the
one he built for Gordon Kately, although
Boris was having other problems on the
drive line, he rates an A on bis workmansbip.
Ken Kotalac is sorting bis injected
Vincent problems out. It may be a few
weeks before he gets 1,t running the way
he wants it to.
Moulders and Reese were out and bad
a new rider. Reese was in an accident
a few weeks back wb1le riding on the
street, bi tt1ng a car broadside as it ran
a stop sign. He suffered a broken arm
wbicb turned out serious as the bone was
shattered, a split lip and other cuts and
bruises. Other than tbts, Reese is the
same ornery guy.
Bill Johnson took over as rider on the
Snortin' Nor-ton #2. Bill has been a top
