Birmingham, luvs!) :l:, Richmond Ramblers Run in the Mud Again '" Tucson TT Coming Q., Looks like we're going to have a good CJ:l group at the Arizona State Championships ~ April 13th. John Rice is going and we ~ know he'll blow his cool when he sees t.:l that track because he's a born slider. ..,J Tony Denius swears he's going. If you've U missed Tony and his Harley on the track lately it's because he was involved in a serious auto accident when he center punched a car that turned right in front of him. He got bashed around quite a bit and his jaw is still fully wired, but he wants to get hack riding as soon as he can. The last District 37 scrambles referees meeting wound up the work on the rough draft of the scrambles check list. Copies of this will be sent out to clubs to add anything or make changes etc. because a lot of them didn't have a rep. at those meetings. For shame! - G By Maureen Lee We are certainly tickled pink over the news that Chuck Minert will be going to England this July and thoroughly enjoyed talking to him about it at Perris. If there was ever a rider who deserves to go it' s Feets. Over all these years he'S been supremely loyal to the BSA marque and to his sponsors LeBard and Underwood, and has never ridden anything else, but not from lack of chances. From our brief acquaintance with Jeff Smith and from knOWing Chuck pretty well, those two are much alike and will make a great twosome. As a cheerful note to the 500 Expert class, from what Chuck told us, you guys had better watch out when he comes home. If you think his current scooters run fast, walt till you see what he brings back across the herring pond! We also know that 'the Boys in Brum will enjoy hosting Chuck because he's such a neat Where will you ride 3 years from now? They can't stop you from riding on your own land. The Richmond ramblers M.C. are one of the blessed because they have their own track, located across the Bay from The City at point Richmond. It has lots of uPs and downs and not much flats, and there are some places where ordinary sickle riders have plenty of truble after a rain. Cume to think of it there are places where the ordinary sickle rider has truble when it dont rain. It had rained something feerce the night before and water was still trickling down off the hills. As there are a lot of hills there was a lot of water and almost all of it wound uP in the same place, making a hog waller the like of which I aint seen since [ left No, Mo, my home town. The race was run backwards for Richmond, and this give the boys a chanct to get wound up reel tight when they hit mud. -- ---- ------- !NTENS!f!ED HODAKAS BY CROWELL ,~ Cum to think of it it was something like Corriganvilie, but up ~t Richmond they didn't have no guy~ with funny aksents to show the locals how to ride the wet & slick and so there were many mishaps in the mud. The mud hole was about as wide as a logging road and musta seemed about as long to the riders. If a racer kept to his right he got through with only a l1tUe slickness and water but if he hit too far to the left he found a deep hole that was just about one sickle long. When they blundered into this hole most of the racers shut off and that wuz all she wrote, but a few had sence enoff to crank it on and rare back on the handles when they felt that sinkmg feeling and they came out on the hind wheel in pretty good shape. Them as did otherwise stayed right there for a spell. When you cum right down to it that sweedish fellow don't have much to loose sleep over. But just about everyone had fun, and thats what counts. I hope you like this story and will send me a pass to all the sickle races. Yours Truly SMOKY THOMAS PS Smokey Thomas is not my reel name. My reel name is Evan Jones, but I thought I better not use it because some of these local sickle riders are tuff and I can't fight.
