CO> The Drag Race Scene ~ QI Q., By Dan Zeman Jeff Gough blew his engine a few weeks back and is out racing again. JeU's 48inch Triumph is the quickest and fastest single engine Triumpb on the West Coast. This bike turned a best of 9.96 and 141.80 mph. Jeff has been experimenting with some of Harman & Collins cams lately, so that may have something to do with it. All kinds of motorcycles compete weekly al Ihe dracs. Here a California chopper coes acalnsllhe clocks. Moulders and Reese have been tIPping the can to their Norton and worked their lime down to 10.40 and 135.93 mph, taking runner-uP. Clarence Bailey thinks be may switch to fuel on his twin engine Norton to keep uP with the rest of the crowd. Jolnlnc In the splrll of April Phool are, left, Jack Linn and Brian Janes, jes doln' their thane! Beach, Calit. 90277. This money will be forwarded to Lions Drag Strip. (Results on page 16) Jeff Gauch, aboard Cali!omla's only 9-second Triumph, softens the slick Just beta.. colnc out and nabblne Top BIke honors. Bike runs 4th eear only. STORMS TO VICTO ~ Kawasaki Proves It A very interesting thing happened in Street Division. Kawasaki brought out their new 3-cylinder mndel. What's so great about that? They brought it out in a crate! Everybody was talking about how fast these new models are, but they think they were breathed on. Kawasaki wanted to prove thatltwould go in the twelves and 100 mph or better right out of the crate. After about an hour'S work the machine was assembled and ready to run. Tony Nacosia rode uP to the staging area and on his first run with zero miles on the bike, turned a 13.10 seconds and 99.56 mph. Two runs and one and a half miles later, the bike turned 12.96 and 100.78 mph. There were four other bikes in C Street and tbls same Kawasaki eliminated all four of these and took the Class Trophy. Kawasaki proved their point• ... So Does BSA Dick Strickland took B Street on a 3cylinder BSA machine that wasalsonew. Turned 13.41 and 98.90 mph. I can't believe how popular Drag Racing is getting with the motorcycles. There were 49 bikes entered today. I had to count the entry cards several times to believe this myself. I don't know what to say, except- groovy, man. This 15 the thlrd week in a row that the entries have exceeded the forty mark. There are enough bikes showing uP now to go into the A.H.R.A. breakdowns. This w1ll go into effect April 20th. And w1ll also be in eUect for the July 4th meet. This w1ll be better in the respect there w1ll be a class breakdown about every 95 cubic centimeters. July 4th All-Bike Meet There have been a few questions asked about the July 4th All-Bike Meet at Lions. A little more information has been received and goes as follows: The gates will open at 1: 30 in the afternoon and eliminations w1ll start at 7: 00. There w1ll be pre-entry and the form will be in Cycle News within a COuPle of weeks. Children under twelve w1ll be admitted free. I don't know how the purse will be distributed yet because the total purse won't be announced until June. So far Lions has donated ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Dan Zeman $25.00, Betty "Meet The Dragger" Nichols $25.00and Ed Roth of Choppers Magazine $25.00. Gommi Racing Engines is donating $50.00 worth of shop work to Top Fuel. A few of the local shops say they w1ll donate, but I haven't received any other checks as of yet. Remember, everybody donating towards tbls will have their name or business and the amount donated in this column and there w1ll be a 4' x8' sign at Lions Drag Strip every week uP until and including July 4th. Their name or business plus amouni donated will also be on tbls sign.
