Jack went onr the baDd1ellars wIl1le his Trlumpb did a bit of a watusi and Smith, going wide, was able to continue. We're bsppy to report !bat Jack walked away, althougb his bike'S front eDd aIo't wbat It used to be! Cbuck Minert won the 500 E>qlert class on a BSA engine prepared by Gene Myers for Barry Briggs to ride at the Astrodome and ItfJatbauled! JobnRice(Honda) and Sandy Armstroog (C-Z) both gave It a go but they couldo't catcb the (]ylDg Feets. 500cc Amateur class went to young Cbuck Wheat (Maico) who really put In a good ride to earn his tropb.y. Glen Brunson (Bultsco) and Ron Izzard (Ma.ico) made a good threesome to watcb but Izzard dido't flDisb the third moto aDd Wheat was able to pass Brunson In the gravel pit to win. Tom . LaFortune and BuddY Carter resumed their battle for domination of the Open Amateur. Carter won his heat onr LaFortune but tables were turned In the Malo. Just walt til these two pt to be Experts! Ossa's favorite child DaYid AldaDa won the 250 Expert class with ease but Larry Taylor (Bultaco) bad all stoPs pulledand mar ked this class as the one to watch throughout the year. Bob Frauenberger and Loyal Penn were the shoes In the 250 Amateur. 1bey flat went at It In their heat and re-newed the battle In the malo until Loyal's Yamaha stuck, ending his chances and It was Husky rider Ed ShInault who took second. Open Experts still bad to contend with Terry Dorsch. Seems the semce dido't need blm after all, so .he's going to be around for a wIl1le. Cbuck McIntosb really flew, as did Mike Posey·and Don Dudek. Dudek over-cooked it on the clubhouse turn on the first moto aod vanished over the bank In great style but returned fot the next two heats to really fly. Dorsh has one advantage that some of. the others In that class don't have, he never gets tired! In the tiddler division, Steve Nichols was the star on a very fast Yamaha when he blew ott Richard Sweaney's Kawasaki. Sweaney, who has been winning quite constantly, Just couldo't keep uP with the young K & N rider but steve had made uP bls mind that he would do the job this Sunday and he did. Altogether It was a good day, and we' 11 comment more on it In our ne,,"! week'S column. See you at the Viewfinders G.p. this weekend!
