New Trials School At Saddleback Park ~ SIIIIday, Marcb 9th was the first day The S.C.T.A. laid out threelrapsdown Co:! for tile DeW Sadd1eback Park Trials rld:c: Ing school. In1tlated by track owner Co:! Vic WIlson. the Idea Is to bold an Intor- Story and Photos by Gary Bartoo in the gully. Here the riders rode each section several times, being coached by the Instructors. Then for added cbal1enge the learners rode the sections backwardS, maklng a total of six differeDt sections for !be students. An observer could not belp but notice the improvement taking place under skilled bands of the instructors. One student In particular, at the start of the day could have been nominated for Sammy Miller's "Centipede of the Year" Award. However, at the end of the day, even be was cleanlng the sections. Here was a person who bad learned possibly more In a three-hour session of skilled Instruction than could be picked up In several outings of un-tutored riding. Also In the school tbls day were a couple of riders who bad scrambles bikes and bad purchased trials macblnes for playblkes. As I talked to these riders they commented bow mucb fun they bad been having with their trials Iron. This Is true, for a trials bike Is ODe of the best selections one can lIlJIde for tral1lng and Trlallng. The great low speed lugging power at. these bikes as well as extremely good torque make for excellent hill cllmblng ability. Also if a person wlsbes to compete with others, the S.C.T.A. holds nearly 25 events per year and usually draws approximately 125 riders per meet. mal scboo1 for novice riders. Too many riders at. trail and dirt bikes are not U gettlDc tile full beDeflt of their macblnes. The scbool hopes to change all tbls and help tile riders learn to make full use of tbe1r motorcycles. Instructors In the scbool were Bob Grave and Dave Evans of the Southern ca1lfornia Trials Assoclatlon. Also along for tile day and helping with some of the instruction were S.C.T.A. members Jack Ward and Don Lawrence. Altbougb the turnout was quite small, tbls was to the benefit of the students. They were able to receive more persona1lsed lnstructlon. The students varied In experience from almost noDe to a coaple at riders with a few years under tIIeir belts. As most of the students were Interested In learning more about Trials ridlng, the group mONd OIl to a small gully down near the start at. !be mota-cross track. Here Grave aod Evans proceeded to give the students tips on macblne preparation. Marys Men Sweetheart Run By Billle K. Sager SAN DIEGO, Cal., February 9. 1969Marys Men started the new season off with a honey of a run that lured 165 enthusiasts to ride 125 mUes on their 2nd Annual Sweetheart Run. Coffee and assorted donuts were served at Honda of S.D. where sign-In was held from 8to 10 a.m. Route slips were issued and everyoae rolled north toward Oceanside and the first check point at Mission San Luis Rey. Thougb rain was forecast, the weather was made to order, and the back country with its plush green billsides was a sight for sore eyes. Route 76 was followed to a second check point at Mission San Antonio de Pala in Pauma Valley, a historical site establlsbed in 1816. Continuing on theiastleg. the route led everyone onto higbways 5-6, 395 South and 94 East through Lemon Grove, winding up at The Bancroft Rancb House in Spring Valley. When all had signed In, they were served a delicious Irish stew wbicb bad been cooked to perfection by Mr. Lee Hobby, a member of the bost club. . Contests were then beld and trophies awarded. Results of field events can be found on page 16 in this issue. Notice sbould be made of the fact that The Rainbows from Long Beacb were the longest distance club. However, they had to leave before award presentation and could not be considered first place winner. Nonetheless, a trophy is being beld for them, and contact would be appreciated coocerning this.
