WASHINGTON, D.C" Feb. 28 - The guidelines for motorcycle rider education courses in the public schools were drawn up here at a National Conference on Motorcycle satety Education, just completed. The conference was jointly sponsored by the National Education Association and the American Driver and Traffic satety Education Association, in cooperation wit!! the Motorcycle Scooter & Allied Trades Association. The M!C Safety Council was also represented. Results of the three-day meeting, described in a brief announcement from the industry trade group, included both teacber preparation and student instruction. Groundwork was laid to develop classroom materials and fit motorcycle rider education into the high school curriculum. The complete report will be pllblished shortly and used as the basis for regional NEA workshops this spring. NEA's Commission on Safely Education initiated automobile driver training in the schoots. ~~~ By Barbara Adams Dahms A NON-RIDER SPEAKS UP FOR OUR SIDE In the uproar that followed the recent passing of an ordinance which limited or banned motorcycle ott-road riding in many sections of California's Conejo Valley, a number of local citizens had their say. Their opinions covered both sides of the controversy. The following letter is so outstanding that! want to pass U along to you eJalctly as it appeared in the Thousand oaks News Chronicle. Editor, News-ChronicIe: Thi s leller is directed to those people who are maldng a russ over motorl;Ycles in The Conejo. You make me sick! Why don't you leave the teenagers alone - where else can young people go j( you continue to stiDe their energies? They can go to pot, if you get what I mean. Take your energies elsewhere. Do some good work instead of this continual badgering of the local kids. If you hear the roar of the cycles, at least we know that's one kid that's not out getting into trouble. He's out there riddin g himsellofall th.at pent:UP energy they have at these ages. AnoUler thing, when they aren't riding them, tbey are spending hours in the garages learning how to work on them, which again keeps them out of trouble. I am the mother of three but, there are nO cycles in our family. I live in Lynn Ranch and it's a perfect spot for the • roar of the crowd· and I just rigure when you can bear' em out there, it's better than wonderin' wbere they arl:. So lay orr the teenagers. If anyone is worldng on a petition to allow bikes to he ridden in the bills, call me-I want to sign. BETH NEEDH M, Thou sand Oaks. Calif. These sentiments have been expressed many times by riders, But bearing them from a non- rider is most encouraging. ONE MAN'S PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN In the island state of Hawal1, 11 seems that motorcycle sport is just as thoroughly ignored by the establishment and media as bere on the mainland. When it appeared that native son John DeSoto's current pUgrimage 10 the moto-cross battle~ of Europe would go unpublicized, Dave Thompson, motorcycle editor of "Hawaii Racing News," decided to do something about 11. He wrote eleven letters, to the Mayor, Governor, Senators, Congressmen, City Councilmen and the local newspaper publisher. Result: Governor Burns presented John with a lei on his departure, the local sports editor ran a feature on "the Flyin' Ha walian" and the Mayor called up to see what he could do to help.
