semis woaId never end, and Bob Bowers proved to be the KIng of lJIe 250'5. The 375 Elqlert Main got olf to a wtId start and sent everyone near the track scurrytng In all directions. CUI AItsland had the lead for awllile but had to give way to Jim Saitooe of Petalnma. Bob Roche tonk an early lead In the 500 Am/Ex. Main but it was short-lived as Ray Buff was In there wtth another win on his mind. He tonk two trophies homenot bad for the "old man" (oot in years, but in experience as he had been a tOP contender a long time). Each ooe seems to get bigger and better. It' s unusual for a race around the Sacramento area to draw much over a hundred riders but they drew more than 260 along with five nr six hundred spectators. A funny thing, by the time the heavyweight mains came around you couldn't count a hundred spectators. Goes to show the heavys aren't the main attraction always. One of the hottest contested events was the 250 Expert Main. Don Stover tonk a quick lead with Ray Buff and Gene Conant in hot pursuit, Ray nabbed him the second lap. Then a battle royal raged between Gene and Don and the issue was in doubt right up to the end. Gene took the heat but could do not better than third. in the Main. Jim Denny sure showed the 250 Amateurs how it is dnne. He took a runaway win in the heat, and to prove it was no fluke he repeated the same feat in the Main. Randy Lackey and James Czadek put on a good show battling for the second spot. They gave seven trophies away in the 250 Novice Main. Whiteman Stadium, in Pacoima, Califnrnia, is the scene [or the kickoff this Sunday afternoon, the 23rd - of the roaring 1969 United States speedway season. Expected to put in their appearances to contest the whole issue, among others, will be the 1968 Whiteman High Point rider, AMA National 24, Jack 0' Brien; United States Speedway Champ, Rick WoodS; California State Champion, Sonny Nutter; Four Time World international title holder, Barry Briggs; the "Flying Dutchman," Skip Van Leeuwen; and the racer who has won more than 400 dirt track events, the" Flying Flea," Sammy Tanner. Dude C.risweIl - himself a former Speedway rider - is the man who midwifed the rebirth last year of those spectacular twenty-foot rooster tails. What should the tans be looking for, this year? Criswell was asked. Below: FerJ)"s pass comes to Dlef oa •••Inslid blra. He should be swift-to-astounding. How many riders do you expect [or this season? "Hey •••that's something" Criswell replied. "Last year - the first season - it seems that everyone was either trying to buy a bike, or plead with one of the tuners for a ride. But this year, there is such a tremendous group of the younger racers . who would like to try their hand at this stuff, that Pve already lined up two additional tracks in the immediate area. 1 mean, the tans - as wen as the riders pay their fees; let's give them the fastest, best competition that they've ever seen!'-' SEE .q..-d. On the first lap of the Open class beat, Rusty was being pressed hard by Felipe Terrtquez (65Occ BSA), butRusty sooo shook his tail and had the track to himself as was his custom last year 011 the Wilson 650 Triumph. Seeking to better his standing, Leroy Ferry made a bid to pass Paul Liner (65Occ Triumph) on the approach to the eIghth turn and his streamlined KRTT came to rest at the feet of some astounded spectators there who helPed him right it agaln. On a drying track, the 2llOcc Final was uneventful wi:b George Johnson, Charles Rambo, .Jim Lutz (Bultaco), and David Watkins (Bultaco) the leaders. The Open Final was drier still, for with Daytona in their eyes, some of the better riders preferred to sit and watch Jimmy Anderson (25Occ Kawasaki) take the lead away from Renfro'S Triumph. Many of the Mexican riders were people I had met last year at the stx-hour road race (GP 175's) in Torreon, Coahuila and Gomez Palacios, Durango. One of them, Ignacio Morfin, informed me that this year the Mexico race will be the twentieth of April. interested parties can contact me at Box 6306, Austin, Texas 78702 or write to the Moto club Laguna, Gonzalez Oretega 182 Nte., 'Torreon, Coah., Mexico.
