Two bundred plus riders arrived with the welcome Callforn la sunshin e to pit their moto-c ross skills on the Carlsba d course. It was an AMA point event for the San Diego area, but the Carlsba d regular s domina ted. Expert and amateu r classes ran first, with the novices getting their chance after lunch. Jim won the first moto, but Bailey had plans for the last two. He won them both and the class as well. Wilson wound up second and Hollenbeck third. Owing to a small amount of entries in the 250 amateu r and 125cc eJql8rtc lass- .. es, they were run togethe r. Bill Pettigrew, Greeve s mounted, bestedt becompetition in the amateu r class, and Lars Larson (Penton ) came from behind three times to overtak e Bultaco rider Tom Rapp for the 125cc expert class. The 250 and lOOCc Novice classes were so big that eacb was divided into fligbts. Thirtee n-year- old Bill Cuane won the first 250cc event on a Husky, and J.T . Parker (Malco) got a second for his efforts. Mark Blackw ell, on a Yamaha, wonall three· legs in the second 250cc event with Greeve s mounted Jim Cooke, taking second. After I beard this, I decided I would like my chance. I'm not real easy on any machine and bave new model and Bob offered me out of Bob's sigbt, I my own special way of demons trating a new machin e. After I got machine puts out 60 my playing around. This didn't last long, boweve r. This started the time I got back borsepo wer and it told me in its own way that it wasn't a toy. By had a lot of respect for his bike. to Bob I was very impress ed and In the modified division , Ron Somme rs was the man to beat for the top modified gold. Ron had the best E.T. in all modi• fied, classed wiih his 'C' modified Suzuki. Ron bad a 12.58 second E.T. and Jack Linn in E modified on a 250 had a best of 12.60. So this was to be a close race. Ron got over-an xious and red ligbted, leaving the $10.00 and a tropby to Jack. Mike Casb bad the fastest machine in the Gas division . He took the top Gas money with his Suzuk1500. Mike's engine is mounted in a 250 frame with the front end extende d for better handling. It seemed like a very good day for two strokes . Bob Braverm an took top bike with his twin engine Kawasa ki. Boblike s to run his gasser against the fue1ers for the good competi tion. Two strokes took all division s this week with the exceptio n of top street. Tbe 4th bas been conside red but nothing is certain yet. Arkansas Bike Drag Meet For those of you wbo like to travel, there is an all motorcy cle Drag Meet set for May 18th at the Stuttgar t Air Base near Little Rock, Arkans as. This is suppose d to be one of the biggest meets ever set UP for the motorc ycles. There will be $500.00 for top fuel and $250.00 for runner- up. $300.00 for top gas with $150.00 runner- up.
